As Netflix Brazil’s first-ever legal drama, Habeas Corpus has clearly understood the assignment.

Packed with multiple layers of mysteries, secrets, and hidden motives, the series follows respected law professor and former defence attorney Inez, who forms a conviction-review group with her top law students, including Marina, to overturn Jonathan’s conviction. He has been incarcerated for six years for a crime he didn’t commit, having been a victim of deep-seated corruption.

While Detective Cristina Ogino, AKA Tina, does everything to delay the investigation, her hidden motivation is far from the only thing keeping the audience in the dark. Marina joins the group with an agenda of her own: to right an injustice that terribly affected her family in the past.

There’s clearly a link between Inez’s past that had her abandoning law, and Marina’s agenda. But what is the real reason that she joins the review group?

Why did Marina join Inez’s conviction review group in Habeas Corpus?

Although Habeas Corpus primarily centres on Inez and her review group, who are hell-bent on overturning Jonathan’s conviction, one of the most pressing mysteries is Marina and why she chose to get so close to her professor. Despite multiple obstacles, Jonathan is finally freed by the end of the gripping new legal drama.

But the very next case the review unit focuses on is Eliane Linhares, a woman Inez confesses to having helped wrongfully convict in the past. For those wondering how Marina is connected, well, she’s actually Larissa Linhares, and Elaine is her mother. At the end of the series, Marina reintroduces herself to her colleagues, further revealing that the boy she introduced as her son is actually her brother, whom she has been looking after since their mother’s imprisonment.

In a desperate attempt to overturn Elaine’s conviction and punish Inez, Larissa joined the group using a different identity. However, now that the cat is out of the bag, Inez and Larissa will both team up for the review.

Habeas Corpus also flashes back to reveal what actually happened that night, which prompted Elaine’s arrest. It turns out that it was the daughter who started the fire on the congressman’s land while she was still a child. However, in the process of fighting for her mother’s freedom and trying to hold Inez accountable, Larissa concealed her part in the act that sent Elaine to jail.

With Inez ready to revisit the conviction she helped to create, the status of Elaine’s review remains uncertain. But at least, we know what Marina actually wanted from Inez.
