Gwyneth Paltrow to lead Netflix’s new crime thriller ‘The Apology’: Here’s what you need to know
Gwyneth Paltrow has been a Jane Austen heroine. Come on, the lady won an Oscar but has also spent years putting up with Tony Stark’s nonsense. But headlining a television drama? That’s one box she hadn’t ticked, and Netflix has changed that with her new series, The Apology, which truly has to be one for keeping Paltrow away from this genre.
The streamer has picked up the A24 thriller for not one but two seasons, which is rare given most shows have to fight tooth and nail for a second run, and this one has got it before a single episode has aired. Somebody at Netflix must fancy the script.
And now, before the Glee fans start shouting, yes, Paltrow has done television before. She played Holly Holliday on Glee and appeared in Netflix’s The Politician. But The Apology is her first leading role in a scripted series, which is the career move for someone we know as Pepper Potts.
And despite that title, don’t expect a warm-hearted drama. We are talking some serious stuff here, like a murder confession and a couple who have had enough of waiting for justice. Let’s see what the fuss is all about.
What is the plot of The Apology?
Paltrow plays Evelyn Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a case that gripped the country. The killer was never brought to justice, leaving Evelyn and her husband, Caleb, with questions no parent should have to carry. Then, out of the blue, a stranger shows up and confesses to the crime. Case closed, any sane mind would think.
Not quite, mate. The couple learn that the person responsible might receive a reduced sentence, and that prospect sends them over the edge. Rather than trust the system, Evelyn and Caleb decide to take matters into their own hands. But wait, what does that mean for the stranger? Guess you’ll have to watch and find out.
Who is in the cast of The Apology?
Paltrow is the only cast member announced so far, with the actor playing Caleb yet to be named. Behind the camera, though, the team have pretty good names attached, like Joe Murtagh, who created The Woman in the Wall and is writing and running the series, while Another Round director Thomas Vinterberg is on board to direct.
A24 is producing, and Paltrow will serve as an executive producer alongside Murtagh, Vinterberg and Joe Hipps of Cut To.
When will The Apology release?
No release date has been announced yet, and filming plans remain under wraps. Netflix has committed to two seasons, but those will obviously not release together for sure. But with the names associated with this crime thriller, you can’t help but think about the resolution until the creators prove you wrong.
