Guillermo del Toro unveils ‘Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans’ clip

The Academy-Award winning director of 2017s The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro, is delving into the world of animation with his latest Netflix project, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, premiering July 21.

A science fiction, fantasy adventure, Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans was originally intended as a live-action release, though due to budget constraints, had to be adapted into a novel, Tales of Arcadia: Trollhunters, before it was picked up by Dreamworks and Netflix for a feature.

The story follows an ordinary town with a magical secret underground, a place where trolls, aliens, wizards and more battle for supremacy. Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, will bring together heroes from each of the previous Netflix series’ Trollhunters, 3Below, and Wizards, joining in an epic team-up operation where they must fight the Arcane order and control the magic of the underworld.

Sharing the first few minutes of the film’s opening, the clip shows Douxie (Colin O’Donoghue) attempting to hide Nari (Angel Lin) from the evil clutches of Bellroc (Kay Bess) and Skrael (Piotr Michael).

It’s a project del Toro has been working on since 2016, working with his creative team to build an emotional narrative that explores the technical advances in animation. “We always hoped these three series could culminate with a massive ‘all-stars’ reunion,” del Toro stated. “We wanted the feature to improve and expand but to also deliver more scope, more spectacle … more emotion, too. We are very proud of the Tales of Arcadia and extremely eager to deliver this spectacular finale.”

Written by del Toro, but directed by Johanne Matte, Francisco Ruiz Velasco, and Andrew L. Schmidt Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans boasts a fantastic cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Lexi Medrano, Charlie Saxton, Kelsey Grammer, Alfred Molina, Steven Yeun, and Nick Frost.
