Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ kick-starts filming in London
Netflix announced its plans to adapt the greatly popular CS Lewis Narnia novels in 2018. But in the meantime, the debates and discussions regarding the theatrical versus streaming release had fans really concerned about the ultimate fate of the Netflix movie.
However, these are now just the ghosts of the past. Despite scarce updates on the Narnia production, word on the street suggests the film is indeed in the making in London.
Netflix reportedly had the cameras rolling in for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew this past weekend. Filming took place in and around Bank Station and the Royal Exchange in London. According to What’s on Netflix, picturesque period sets have been erected to recreate the post-war Britain of the 1950s.
Masses of extras have been observed alongside director Greta Gerwig herself. In fact, countless pictures from the sets have already surfaced online, showcasing two unidentified actors, who are speculated to portray Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer.
The leaked snaps from the sets back up NarniaWeb’s reporting that the adaptation will be shifted to the 1950s, serving as a crucial departure from the 19th-century Victorian backdrops. The time jump could prompt big narrative adjustments, specifically in future adaptations. However, it remains to be seen what Netflix has in store.
An Instagram user shared pictures of the props, particularly a flower stall, claiming the film takes place in 1955. However, the hordes of onlookers were not let in on much, except that it’s a shoot for a Netflix movie. For those unaware, the actors attached to Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew include Emma Mackey as The White Witch and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew.
While Carey Mulligan is still in the talks, Meryl Streep is rumoured to play Aslan. Then again, the streaming platform has yet to confirm the cast and the film is speculated to be shot across the South and South East as well as in Shepperton Studios.
As of now, there’s no word on a production wrap date. However, based on the previously revealed production dates, the publication estimates the Netflix film to finish shooting in early 2026. In time, more updates will surface. So, stay tuned!
