Four long years after the release of Downfall: The Case Against Boeing, Netflix is finally ready to unleash the highly anticipated documentary sequel Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing this month.

Premiering August 19th, the upcoming 93-minute movie dives deep into the Boeing investigation, whereby Rory Kennedy continues its probe into the American aeroplane manufacturer, plagued by allegations and accusations that they continue to prioritise profit over passenger safety and quality control.

Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing, the follow-up documentary, primarily focuses on the Boeing Dreamliner factory employees located in Charleston, South Carolina, where safety concerns have been heightening with each passing day. Insider accounts from the factory suggest that “rotten” or scrapped parts are allegedly being improperly reused.

While Downfall: The Case Against Boeing investigated the tragic 2018 Lion Air and 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crashes involving the Boeing 737 MAX, which killed 346 people, exposing corporate greed, the Netflix sequel explores Boeing’s continued safety scarcity, manufacturing flaws, cultural retaliation against the exposé, and the tragic death of quality manager and whistleblower John Barnett.

Barnett, who has been a source of inspiration for people to come forward with safety crises, worked as a Boeing Quality Manager between 1985 and 2017. Several such individuals alleged that they faced retaliation for their honesty and intimidation from management after reporting safety complaints to federal regulators.

Barnett not only took a stand against Boeing’s quality concerns but also suggested that the oxygen systems are less likely to work during an emergency, among several other bombshell revelations that could make any normal person reconsider boarding the flight today. While he faced deposition from his job role for peeling back the layers of one of the most polarising topics of all time, the new movie Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing touches on Barnett’s highly publicised death.

The Netflix sequel centres on Barnett and the personal toll he faced after raising his voice, despite inspiring and encouraging several others to come out. Additionally, the film connects past warnings with recent high-profile aviation incidents, including the Alaska Airlines mid-air door-plug blowout.
