Four Netflix shows to watch if you loved ‘Nobody Wants This’
Netflix did us all a favour by bringing back Nobody Wants This for a third season, and Joanne and Noah are proving that being mad at each other does not make life any easier. With those families involved, the romance inevitably comes with pain, but hey, those two did a great job handling that maddening bunch this season.
And Kristen Bell and Adam Brody make it worth the bother, mind you. There is only so much chemistry that they really make the phrase “match made in heaven” feel real.
The new season gives them bigger decisions to face, as they work out what a future together looks like while everyone else insists on having their say. They got secretly married, for crying out loud, and while they have a bigger mess to face, let’s just be happy that they worked it out.
And while we can’t wait for a newer season, for the time being, we’ll have to do with whatever’s available on Netflix at the moment.
Four Netflix shows to watch if you loved Nobody Wants This
Love (2016–2018)
Judd Apatow, the man behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin, helped create Love, and you can tell he was having a good time making these characters suffer through the horrors of modern dating. Gillian Jacobs plays Mickey, a woman trying to get her life together after a breakup, while Paul Rust plays Gus, a nice enough fella who has his own issues to deal with. They meet in Los Angeles when neither is in much shape for a relationship, but falling for someone has to be the easiest job in this whole wide world
And if Joanne and Noah’s arguments in Nobody Wants This is your cup of tea, Mickey and Gus will test your patience in much the same way. They love each other, no doubt about that, but their insecurities keep getting in the way, and watching them work through those problems feels very close to real life. The show ran for three seasons, and thank goodness it gives their relationship room to grow.
The Hook Up Plan (2018–2022)
Elsa’s friends in The Hook Up Plan deserve a medal for having the worst good idea in the history of friendship. The poor woman is still hung up on her ex after two years, so her friends Charlotte and Milou decide to hire a male escort to help her move on. Not a blind date or a night out at the pub… an actual paid escort! Elsa ends up falling for Jules without having a clue that her friends arranged the whole thing.
And the trouble is that Jules starts developing feelings for Elsa too, which makes keeping the arrangement a secret a complete nightmare. It’s a French romantic comedy with three seasons, and much like Nobody Wants This, the people who care about the couple have a habit of making matters worse. You know that awful feeling when someone’s keeping a secret, and you’re waiting for it to come out? Make sure to stick to this because Elsa’s in for one hell of a shock.
Little Things (2016–2021)
Nobody Wants This is loved by most for Joanne and Noah’s heartwarming chemistry; these two show us that a little miscommunication or confusion can be solved by having a calm discussion, and if that’s what you loved about the show, then we have got a perfect little indian show called Little Things whose central couple, Dhruv and Kavya, have barely anything different from these two except their families are quite okay with their relationship.
They play a young couple sharing a flat in Mumbai, and their problems are the kind most couples will recognise. Work gets stressful and sometimes a disagreement over how to spend the weekend is enough to put everyone in a foul mood. And that’s what makes this four-season series worth watching, because it doesn’t need some massive romantic disaster to keep things interesting. Dhruv and Kavya have to deal with their careers and what they want from life, which brings to mind Joanne and Noah trying to work out their future in Nobody Wants This. Mind you, watching a couple bicker over everyday nonsense can hit a bit close to home.
An Astrological Guide for Broken Hearts (2021–2022)
Oh, spare a thought for Alice Bassi, because the poor woman’s love life has become such a disaster that she’s decided the stars might have better advice than the people around her. Alice works at a small television network in Turin, where her career isn’t going great either, and then she finds out her ex is getting married and having a baby. Sheesh, that must’ve hurt. But things take an interesting turn when she meets Tio, an astrology enthusiast who offers to help her find love through the zodiac.
Based on Silvia Zucca’s novel, this Italian romantic comedy gives its episodes names based on star signs, which is a nice touch considering how much faith Alice puts in them. And there’s Davide, the new creative director at work, who catches her attention while she’s trying to follow Tio’s advice. If you enjoyed the religious differences causing trouble for Joanne and Noah in Nobody Wants This, watching Alice let astrology influence her romantic decisions should give you a laugh.
