Four best murder mysteries on Netflix that’ll keep you guessing
For years, murder mysteries have been making fools of us, and funnily enough, we fall for the same silly trick every time! You are sitting there playing detective, while the genius behind the screenplay knows you’ve been barking up the wrong tree since the opening scene.
Remember The Sixth Sense? That ending had an entire generation questioning its powers of observation. Do not forget Netflix’s Glass Onion, which isn’t any kinder to you.
And the most infuriating part is the clues which are right there all along, but you are too busy accusing some unfortunate soul who hasn’t done a thing
So get up, and get ready to give these four murder mysteries on Netflix a chance to bring out the detective inside you once again. Just don’t get too cocky before the final revelation.
Four best murder mysteries on Netflix that’ll keep you guessing
Luther: The Fallen Sun (Jamie Payne, 2023)
We can guarantee that the Met must be sick to death of John Luther by now, because this man can catch murderers for England but can’t seem to do it without breaking half the law himself. Idris Elba’s detective has been giving his bosses sleepless nights since the BBC series Luther, and in The Fallen Sun, well, they’ve had enough of his antics, and he’s ended up in the police station. Except there’s a murderer from an old case running about London, taunting him from the outside, and the bastard knows Luther can’t do a thing about it.
And Andy Serkis, gosh, what a vile piece of work he plays here. His David Robey is filthy rich, gets his kicks out of blackmailing people over secrets they’d rather die than reveal, and as if that wasn’t bad enough, he’s got this sick murder operation going on. And since Luther has had enough of sitting in prison, so off he goes to catch this lunatic himself.
Locked In (Nour Wazzi, 2023)
If you think your family’s got problems, have a look at the one in Locked In, because this is one of those families that can make Christmas dinner feel like a war zone! Famke Janssen plays Katherine, a former actress whose adopted daughter Lina has gone and married her stepson Jamie, who’s been ill for years. And Katherine obviously is pissed and can’t stand the marriage, and then Jamie’s handsome doctor gets involved because, of course, this family needed another complication. But things take a turn for the worse when Katherine gets hit by a car and ends up in hospital.
But what happens next is enough to give you the creeps. Katherine is conscious, and she knows what’s going on around her, but she can’t move or speak. So nurse Nicky starts using an alphabet board so Katherine can spell out words by blinking. And what’s the first word she manages to get out? Murder! Now, who’s trying to kill whom, and what on earth has this family been hiding? You’re going to find out in this brilliant murder mystery.
Brazen (Monika Mitchell, 2022)
Alyssa Milano plays a bestselling crime novelist in Brazen, and you’d think someone who spends her days writing about murders would know a thing or two about solving one. Well, she’s about to find out how different things are when it’s her own family involved. Grace Miller visits her estranged sister Kathleen, who’s a schoolteacher caught up in a custody battle, only for Kathleen to end up murdered. And then the police discover she’s been earning money as an online dominatrix called Desiree.
And Grace? She’s not about to leave the investigation to the professionals, thank you very much. Detective Ed Jennings is handling the case, but he also happens to fancy her, which makes things a bit awkward when she starts interfering with his work. Now, whether the police appreciate her help is another matter, but good luck telling a crime novelist to keep her nose out of a murder investigation!
A Fall from Grace (Tyler Perry, 2020)
A Fall from Grace’s Grace Waters just wanted another shot at love after a miserable divorce, but this Tyler Perry movie instead makes you wonder whether staying single might’ve been the better option. Crystal Fox plays Grace, a middle-aged woman who falls for Shannon, a younger guy who seems like the answer to all her prayers. But the man is a con artist who ends up draining her finances, and as if that wasn’t bad enough, Grace finds herself accused of murdering him.
Now Grace has already confessed to the crime, so her inexperienced public defender, Jasmine Bryant, is expected to sort out a plea deal and get on with it. Except something about Grace’s story doesn’t make sense because if this woman’s admitted to murder, why does half of what she’s saying make no sense? Let’s just say Tyler Perry has some surprises for you.
