The forgotten Tom Cruise movie climbing the Netflix chart in Canada

The debate between streaming and theatrical releases has raged on far too long. Yet, no one can deny the boons that came automatically with the rise of the streaming era. Viewers no longer have to shuffle through dust-stricken VHS tapes for a revisit. A play button on Netflix can literally bring Hollywood to your toes. Amid the rave reviews of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, another Tom Cruise title has gone up the Netflix charts in Canada.

According to Netflix’s ‘Top Ten Most Popular Movies in Canada’ chart, dated May 26th to June 1st, 2025, Mission: ImpossibleDead Reckoning has secured its position at number ten. The Tom Cruise starrer has already spent five weeks on the Netflix chart, underscoring the anticipation Ethan Hunt brought upon his coattails with his latest blockbuster entry.

Additionally, Dead Reckoning is currently reigning the Top Ten charts across 22 countries. In the film, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team are in the buildup stage before they face off against the Entity, threatening to destroy the world and the future of humankind. As a result, they must retrieve the key to the terrifying new weapon awaiting to unleash wrath on Earth.

While this is not the only movie which had a second wind on Netflix, what made Dead Reckoning climb up the charts? Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the latest and last of the Tom Cruise-led franchise, serves as a sequel to Dead Reckoning. It was released in May. In The Final Reckoning, Cruise and his IMF team are put in a do-or-die situation where they must answer their instinctive calling or their final reckoning. Since The Final Reckoning picks up the story from where Dead Reckoning left off, this revisit could be a warm-up before the last calling.

Dead Reckoning stars some of the biggest names in the industry, ranging from Simon Pegg to Ving Rhames, among other notable additions to the stacked casting list. Cruise, Pegg, and Rhames reprise their roles alongside Klementieff in the last movie. Currently, The Final Reckoning is making waves at the box office.

In contrast, Dead Reckoning is making its presence known on Netflix. While streamers and theatres may not see eye-to-eye, that is only until the Mission: Impossible guy walks in. Indeed, the streaming timing is truly impeccable. However, the curiosity and intrigue do not only concern the streaming whereabouts of Dead Reckoning. Ever since Tom Cruise began building the hype for The Final Reckoning, viewers have scoured through every streaming platform for a franchise re-run.

Considering the final flick serves as the immediate continuation of Dead Reckoning, the craze totally makes sense. In essence, many projects have been rendered timeless over their streaming reincarnation. However, the Cruise mania with Dead Reckoning has many underlying factors that catalysed its uptick on Netflix’s all-time chart. The most important of all was his final lap with the blockbuster franchise.
