Forgotten Lily Collins movie becomes unlikely Netflix smash

She might be the star of a massively popular Netflix series, but it’s one of the lesser-known entries in the filmography of Lily Collins that’s been tearing it up on the streaming service’s viewership charts this week.

The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated star of the platform’s romantic drama comedy Emily in Paris is a very familiar face to subscribers the world over based on the show’s bumper ratings across its three seasons so far, but it’s chilling psychological thriller Inheritance that’s been keeping audiences gripped to the edge of their seats.

Scripted by Matthew Kennedy and directed by Vaughn Stein, the passing of Patrick Warburton’s wealthy patriarch Archer Monroe bequeaths a significant sum of money to his surviving family members, only for Collins’ Lauren to stumble upon a shocking secret that threatens to tear the clan apart from the inside out.

Archer leaves behind a video where he ominously directs her to a secret underground bunker located within his palatial estate, which contains a revelation that upends her entire worldview. Some secrets might be better left off buried, though, and several of Lauren’s own family members are of that very mind.

The ensemble cast also features Simon Pegg, Connie Nielsen, Chace Crawford, and Michael Beach, with shifting loyalties and prospective duplicity running rampant the closer Collins’ protagonist comes to the unvarnished and traumatising truth behind the fortune amassed by the Monroes and the way they went about amassing it in the first place.

Admittedly, the twist is a fairly silly one, but with whodunnits and murder mysteries being as popular as they are, it was inevitable Inheritance would gain a second lease of life on streaming following an initial May 2020 release that slipped under the radar for obvious reasons.

Recognisable names and high concepts are about as easy a sell as there can be on-demand, which has been reflected in Inheritance snaking its way onto Netflix’s top ten most-watched movies list in fourth place.

Collins only ended up playing the lead role to begin with when Kate Mara dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, and it’s worked out in the long run for the star after she reinforced her popularity among Netflix’s customer base.

Obviously, it’s a million miles away from the light and frothy antics of Emily in Paris, but at least it’s keeping her on screens until the series returns for its fourth season, which premieres in two parts on August 15th and September 12th.
