Five thriller shows on Netflix perfect for a snowy day
The Eternaut (Bruno Stagnaro, 2025-Present)
Based on Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s classic comic book, first published in 1957, The Eternaut is an Argentine sci-fi thriller on Netflix set in Buenos Aires. Although the nation has only seen snowfall three times in its recorded history, when snowflakes do begin to fall, covering the entire ground, a sense of urgency swamps the expected excitement, as concerning reports pile up involving the very snow.
It turns out, anyone who touches or is touched by the snowflakes is killed within seconds. With each passing day, the body bags are mounting taller than the highest peaks. But the question is: what exactly is this fatal threat? Does it mean there’s something more to follow? The Eternaut follows the emergence of survivors, particularly a man named Juan Salvo, who is ready to risk it all to prevent the invisible force from consuming all of humanity.
The Rain (Kenneth Kainz and Natasha Arthy, 2018-2020)
Co-created by Jannik Tai Mosholt, Esben Toft Jacobsen, and Christian Potalivo, The Rain is a Danish post-apocalyptic series on Netflix that tells the story of a young group of survivors who travel across Denmark and Sweden to find a safe shelter. The story opens when a virus carried by rainfall wipes out nearly all of humanity in Scandinavia, and Danish siblings Simone and Rasmus find shelter in a bunker.
Six years after the incident, they resurface to embark on a pursuit for their father, who left them in the bunker all those years ago and never returned. The Rain follows Simon and Rasmus’s search for their father as they find themselves in the company of other survivors, who not only join them to locate a safe space, but also to track down their father, who might just have the answers to their questions and the mystery surrounding the rain.
The Åre Murders (Joakim Eliasson and Alain Darborg, 2025)
Considered as one of the grittiest offerings from Netflix’s Swedish slate of productions, The Åre Murders is a Nordic noir television series that follows Stockholm police officer Hannah. After breaking up with her partner, she takes a break from work and moves into her sister’s vacation home in a Swedish ski resort town called Åre.
While Hannah’s restlessness begins to get intolerable, a young girl goes unexpectedly missing on the eve of a Swedish holiday, sending townspeople into alert. Luckily for her, the local police department’s bandwidth is not enough to carry out a full-fledged investigation, so Officer Daniel unwillingly joins forces with her, accepting her as his new partner. But the deeper they dig into the case, the quicker their mutual trust begins to fray as The Åre Murders leave the small town scrambling for resolution.
The Perfect Mother (Frédéric Garson, 2022)
The Perfect Mother is a four-part limited series on Netflix that will leave you on the edge of your seat in less than four hours. The miniseries follows Berlin-based Hélène Berg, who races against time to reach Paris after hearing the news that her daughter, Anya, is the prime suspect in a ruthless murder case that’s all over the news. Determined to prove her daughter’s innocence, Hélène launches her own investigation.
But the further she probes, the more likely she is to question herself if she even really knew her own daughter. The Perfect Mother follows the determined mother who joins forces with her ex-partner and lawyer, Vincent, to clear Anya’s name, uncovering a web of conspiracy and compromising evidence along the way, setting the stage for a thrilling plot twist.
Treason (Louis Hooper and Sarah O’Gorman, 2022)
Lastly, to end the snowy day marathon, we have a gripping five-part spy thriller, Treason. The 2022 Netflix series revolves around MI6 agent Adam Lawrence, who is promoted to lead the agency when the Chief of MI6, Sir Martin Angelis, is poisoned. While the crisis inevitably leads to his professional climb, Kara, a Russian spy and former lover of Adam, resurfaces only to reveal that she had arranged the poisoning of Angelis and has been manipulating Adam’s rise for a mission too deadly.
Kara has her sights set on the prize: gaining access to information regarding the killing of her own team in Baku. As Adam navigates a complex web of lies and personal betrayal, CIA’s eyes of suspicion falls on Adam, who suspect him of playing a double agent. Treason follows Adam’s journey of proving his innocence while grappling with a scrambling professional career and personal life.
