Five secrets the Duffer Brothers revealed about ‘Stranger Things’
So you thought you knew Stranger Things? Think again. Just when we thought Volume 2 had dropped all the bombs it could, Matt and Ross Duffer decided to toss a few more grenades in an interview.
And no, we are not talking about theories or Easter eggs you saw on Reddit. These are actual behind-the-scenes truths that will flip your entire Upside Down understanding. Like how much of Will’s story was real for Noah, or why they printed the finale script on red paper. (Red! Paper!)
Ready? Because once you know these five secrets, there is no unknowing them. Let’s go.
The ending was locked in from the very beginning
Yep. Before we even met the Demogorgon, the Duffer Brothers already had the final scene in mind. They didn’t always know how they would get there, and it turns out the road to Vecna is paved with rewrites… but that last moment? That was always the plan. They even said the entire structure of season five was designed around building to that scene. No multiple endings, no last-minute pivots. They just had to protect it like it was a state secret.
Will’s coming-out scene was written with Noah in mind
The scene where Will comes out? That wasn’t just for the show. That was real. The brothers said they rewrote that moment again and again until it felt true and not just for the character but for Noah Schnapp himself. They were nervous when they first showed it to him because it mirrored parts of his real life. And Noah? He crushed it in the first take. That close-up? One shot. One raw, vulnerable, knockout punch of a performance. Even the Duffers admitted they sobbed behind the camera.
Sadie Sink was warned early about Max’s fate
After season four, Sadie Sink could have easily assumed Max was gone for good. But the Duffers told her, before handing her the finale script, that she’d definitely be back. They didn’t give away how her story would play out (turns out, neither did they fully know back then), but they wanted her to know she wasn’t out of the Stranger Things world. Which is smart, because watching Max pass the torch to Holly? Absolute chills.
The Kali reveal was kept under lock and key
Linnea Berthelsen is back as Kali! Massive surprise for everyone. And the craziest part is how long she was on set… months… without a single leak. No paparazzi shot, no blurry fan photo. Which is kind of wild, considering how Matthew Modine once rolled up to set in a convertible and accidentally got spoiled by the press in less than 48 hours. The Duffers literally told Linnea, “No convertibles.” So iconic.
Stranger Things is ending, but not really
So here is the truth: Season five is the end… for this gang. But the Duffers are already deep into a new spinoff, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, and working on a live-action series too. Different characters, different decades, but still part of the same universe. It won’t be Eleven, Hopper, and Dustin anymore, but the Upside Down isn’t done with us just yet.
