All Quiet on the Western Front (Edward Berger, 2022)
Serving as the third film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, the 2022 German epic anti-war movie is undoubtedly one of the most deserving Oscar winners, currently streaming on Netflix. Set in 1917, the third year of World War I, the movie follows 17-year-old Paul Bäumer, who enlists in the German army with his friends despite his parents’ wishes.
Driven by initial patriotism and camaraderie, Paul joins the army quite enthusiastically at first. However, as soon as he is allotted to the front lines of northern France, the reality of what it means to be at war dawns on him. As he’s taken off guard by the ruthlessness of trench warfare, Paul develops strong bonds with his fellow army men, soon making them the backbone of his survival as their fast-fleeting lives in front of unretractable violence overwhelm them all.

In addition to making Oscar history at the 91st Academy Awards, Roma, Alfonso Cuarón’s critically acclaimed drama, has won multiple Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and BAFTAs. The historical drama, currently streaming on Netflix, is set in early 1970s Mexico City and tells the story of Cleo, an indigenous live-in maid working for a middle-class family, Sofia, her doctor husband, Antonio, and their four children, in the Colonia Roma neighbourhood.
Roma follows Cleo’s personal struggles, overlapping with her employer Sofia’s marital situation. While Sofia’s domestic life is marked by unprecedented betrayal and marital abandonment, Cleo discovers she’s pregnant, resulting in her boyfriend leaving her without a second thought. Despite their deep scars, Sofia and Cleo find a way to bond, making room for a found family.

Things turn bitter, and their deep-seated resentments become the anchor of the finalisation of a divorce. Marriage Story follows the pair as they navigate a cross-country divorce and custody battle for their son, unknowingly making space for a separate sense of normalcy.
