Five Netflix releases to watch out for this week

The Asset (Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm and Kasper Barfoed, 2025)

Netflix loves a gripping crime drama. And in 2025, it’s clearly not skipping a week without any. For those uninitiated, The Asset is a new action-driven crime series that just launched on Netflix today, October 27th. It revolves around an ambitious police cadet, Tea, who penetrates a ruthless crime syndicate that’s been throwing dust in the eyes of law enforcement, disguised as a jeweller, and the first key objective of her mission is to get close to the kingpin’s wife, Ashley.

But when she actually makes her way in, befriending Ashley to leech out information crucial to the case, Ashley’s life within the criminal underworld and her husband’s all-consuming control over her raise questions about her loyalty.

Ballad of a Small Player (Edward Berger, 2025)

If The Woman in Cabin 10 taught us anything, it’s that a good psychological thriller doesn’t go unnoticed. This week, Netflix has its fingers crossed that the same applies to Edward Berger’s upcoming entry from the genre, Ballad of a Small Player. The Netflix film stars Collin Farrell as an addicted high roller, Lord Boyle, who’s keeping low-key in Macao, China.

But as his past and his mounting debts draw level, Doyle stumbles upon a boon companion, whose arrival may hold the key to both reclamation and redemption. Ballad of a Small Player already hit select theatres earlier this month, and now it’s slated to officially premiere globally on Netflix on October 29th.

Rulers of Fortune (Heitor Dhalia, Rafael Miranda Fejes, and Matias Mariani, 2025)

Speaking of crime dramas, another Netflix release viewers really need to keep an eye out for this week is Rulers of Fortune. The Brazilian series opens with a glimpse of Rio de Janeiro’s most fearsome crime syndicate amidst the empire’s stiff competition from an equally dangerous contender, currently on the rise, known as Profeta.

Needless to say, every step he takes is crucial and critical. And what awaits him in the future, fans need to check that out on Rulers of Fortune, releasing on Netflix this Wednesday.

Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers (Emily Turner, 2025)

And the one that’s about to leave the audience seated in jaw drops is Emily Turner’s upcoming documentary, Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers. The Netflix documentary recounts the story of notorious killer Aileen Wuornos, who murdered seven men across central Florida between 1899 to 1990.

Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers is told through Wuornos’ words, archival footage, and interviews that help viewers grasp the objectives that made her turn to a life of unflinching crime. The documentary is slated to be released on Netflix on October 30th. So, don’t forget to save the date!

The Witcher (Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, 2019-Present)

The last time we traversed the Continent, we were greeted by Henry Cavill’s Geralt. But from The Witcher’s fourth season, everything is about to change with Liam Hemsworth taking on the mantle. The upcoming season, scheduled to drop on Netflix on October 30th, and the fifth season that will follow after, cover Andrzej Sapkowski’s three remaining books from the series, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake.

The Witcher will pick up from the ending of the third season, where Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer were each left on their own amidst the war plaguing the Continent. During their separation, they stumble across unprecedented friends who can make a reunion possible. But that’s only if they can make room for these found families. While The Witcher has had fans awaiting with bated breath for years now, here’s hoping the wait turns out to be worth it.
