Five Netflix releases to watch out for this week
Troll 2 (Roar Uthaug, 2025)
The monster magic is not lost just yet. If anything, it is only manifesting differently every other week. First, we had the Creature from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and then came Vecna with its Upside Down army in Stranger Things. Now, it’s officially time to welcome Troll 2 to the club as Netflix lays down the bricks for a monstrous adventure on December 1st.
The first movie, based on Norwegian folklore, revolves around a soon-to-begin railway project through the Dovre Mountains, which inadvertently reawakens a sleeping beast, held captive for over a thousand years. As hell breaks loose, the government call palaeontology professor, Nora Tidemann and her motley group of assistants. Meanwhile, Troll 2 commences with a fresh new threat amid the carnage of an equally dangerous troll and Nora, with political advisor Andreas Isaksen and major Kristoffer Holm, must find a way to stop them.
My Secret Santa (Mike Rohl, 2025)
Coming from The Princess Switch franchise director, Mike Rohl, My Secret Santa is an upcoming Netflix film that tells the story of a single mom, Taylor, desperate and determined to send her daughter to an elite snowboarding camp at Sun Peaks ski resort. Assisted by her friends, she makes a plan to design prosthetics and disguise herself as an old man, hoping to land her a seasonal job as Santa at that very resort, which could pay for her daughter’s snowboarding camp.
But when she does actually get the job, Taylor’s world begins to unravel in ways she couldn’t have imagined. She meets a charismatic man at the resort, Matthew, who is actually the manager of Sun Peaks. While she snubs him initially, not even she can deny the chemistry between the two. What remains to be seen is whether her deceptive job eventually becomes a roadblock in what could be a genuine connection. To find out, tune into My Secret Santa on December 3rd.
The Abandons (Kurt Sutter)
Missing some Western drama on Netflix? Well, the wait is about to end with The Abandons coming out this week on December 4th. And just so you know, this journey is going to be better than it sounds. Starring Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey, the upcoming Western thriller is set in the Washington Territory in 1984. But unlike the Western shows you’re used to seeing, this centres on two equally hardened matriarchs, from polar opposite social classes.
Firstly, we have the Van Nesses, led by Anderson’s Constance, a dynasty marked by its wealth and prosperity. Secondly, we have the Abandons, a found family comprising orphans and outcasts, who are protected by their mother figure, Headey’s Fiona Nolan. As the Washington Territory settlement expands, Constance eyes Jasper Hollow, the ranch the Abandons call home. While Fiona makes it clear that the land is anything but for sale, neither matriarch will back down in their fight to protect their legacies and livelihoods.
Jay Kelly (Noah Baumbach, 2025)
Noah Baumbach is bringing together a duo, best known in Hollywood for their comedic timing, George Clooney and Adam Sandler, in what Netflix describes as a “heartbreaking comedy,” Jay Kelly. The Netflix movie stars Clooney as Jay Kelly, a popular movie star, with the comedy king, Sandler, portraying his determined, hard-working manager, Ron.
Together, Jay and Ron embark on an unexpected journey through Europe, which arrives with its fair share of revelations and eye-openers. As a result, both are forced to come to terms with the choices they have made so far while reflecting on their relationships with their loved ones, leaving them on their own to think about the legacies they will leave behind. Jay Kelly hits the Netflix shelves on December 5th, so better be prepared.
The Price of Confession (Lee Jung-hyo, 2025)
Lastly, for those who love a good mystery thriller, Netflix is bringing a psychological one, The Price of Confession, on December 5th. But make no mistake, this is unlike anything you’ve probably seen before. The South Korean series follows Yun-su, whose dreams of a happy family upends when her husband is killed and she’s accused of the murder.
Struggling to prove her innocence, especially after her nonchalant behaviour during the investigation, she ends up in a prison where she encounters a mysterious woman called a witch. Known for her abilities to read people, their meeting is regarded as nothing less than fate. Little does Yun-su realise that this encounter comes with its consequences. But whether the repercussions worsens her life or makes it better is for viewers to find out this Friday.
