Five Netflix releases to keep an eye out for this week
Netflix is letting its guard down with each passing day of 2026, and just four days into May, the lineup is already looking exceptionally captivating.
Although March felt endless and April passed within the blink of an eye, each and every month of the year so far has passed the vibe check effortlessly, May being no exception.
While it’s alright to be concerned about whether Netflix can live up to the bar it has just set, we are honestly going to let you be the judge of that with all that’s coming to streaming this week.
That said, Netflix clearly has a huge lineup waiting in the wings. However, if you want the best of the best from its original slate, here are the five Netflix releases to keep an eye out for this week.
Five Netflix releases to watch out for this week
Lord of the Flies (Marc Munden, 2026)
Based on William Golding’s dystopian classic, Lord of the Flies just got its first-ever television adaptation as a four-episode miniseries on Netflix. Scheduled to hit Netflix shelves on May 4th, follows a group of English schoolboys stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash, detailing their descent from innocence to barbaric savagery.
Unlike previous adaptations, Lord of the Flies dedicates each episode to a different character – Piggy, Jack, Ralph, and Simon – to offer an in-depth exploration, highlighting the rise of personal and political conflicts driven by the desire for order against power. While the conflict leads to a total collapse of their society, what else follows this power play of friction is for you to find out. So, save the date, already?
Legends (Brady Hood and Julian Holmes, 2026)
Inspired by an untold true story, Legends is a six-episode crime thriller created by Neil Forsyth, set in the early ‘90s amidst the rise of drug smuggling in Britain, when a small group of Customs officers are recruited to act as amateur, undercover operatives to bust the crime ring from within. Since they lacked formal training, they had to adopt new personas as “legends” to infiltrate sophisticated, fearsome criminal syndicates.
Legends revisit the true story of these very Customs agents who risk their lives, adapting to hazardous situations while maintaining their cover, often leaving their former lives behind. The crime thriller is a gritty, character-driven drama that explores the ingenuity and fear experienced by these ordinary people who were put against extraordinary odds. The series is set to arrive on Netflix on May 7.
The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek (Roni Ezra, 2021-Present)
It took five years for Netflix’s gripping Danish crime thriller, The Chestnut Man’s comeback, but at least, better than never, right? Slated to drop on May 7th, the sequel season, titled Hide and Seek, picks up the story when a 41-year-old woman goes missing. As authorities try to trace her digital footprints, they realise that someone had been tailing her for months.
In fact, it becomes clear that the still unidentified perpetrator has been involved in a game of hide and seek all this time, not only stalking her but also sending her images, videos, and a seemingly harmless nursery rhyme that screams there’s more to the mystery than one can see. The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek follows the case as it evolves from a missing persons report to that of a murder, linking an unsolved murder case of a 17-year-old from two years ago.
USA 94: Brazil’s Return to Glory (Luis Ara, 202)
While the arrival arc on Netflix is not without thrills, it has something special for soccer fans this week: USA 94: Brazil’s Return to Glory. Arriving on May 7th, the forthcoming mini-series chronicles Brazil’s journey to winning their fourth World Cup title in 1994, breaking a 24-year drought. Directed by Luis Ara, the documentary features intimate, never-before-seen footage captured by star players, highlighting the team’s ascent.
USA 94: Brazil’s Return to Glory explores the immense pressure on the Brazilian team following their 1990 World Cup exit, getting to the point with a bit of a backstory. Although many sports documentaries have come and gone over the years, this documentary promises to provide a raw, day-to-day look at their experience, focusing on their unity and key performers.
Remarkably Bright Creatures (Olivia Newman, 2026)
Lastly, coming to the pick of the week, it’s undoubtedly Remarkably Bright Creatures, releasing on May 8th. Based on Shelby Van Pelt’s novel of the same name, the upcoming mystery drama follows grieving widow Tova, a worker at an aquarium who unexpectedly forms a unique, profound bond with a giant Pacific octopus called Marcellus.
As Tova finds comfort in her unlikely friendship with Marcellus, the octopus, in turn, becomes a key support in uncovering the truth regarding her son’s decades-old disappearance. Meanwhile, a young man, Cameron, arrives in town looking for his past, ultimately crossing paths with Tova and Marcellus, inadvertently becoming part of their healing. Remarkably Bright Creatures clearly explores the themes of grief and friendship. However, what it emphasises the most is the idea of a found family.
