Five Netflix characters who were turned into gold memes

Netflix and memes go together like bacon and eggs. The streaming platform isn’t only an on-screen content generator; it is also a cultural touchstone for millions. It means being a character in one of its projects suggests you may be up for memeification very soon.

It’s a good thing that you can so easily enjoy a drama or a deeply disturbing horror movie safe in the knowledge that the lead villain is about to be turned into a meme for the ages.

As such, we’ve created a collection of our favourite Netflix favourites who traversed their position on our screens and found themselves permanently lodged in our brains underneath the pile of memes.

Expect embarrassing monologue moments, unintentional comedy and pure, unadulterated meltdowns galore. If you’ve had a tough day, it is about to get easier.

Five Netflix characters who were turned into gold memes

Joe Goldberg from You

Joe Goldberg may come across as a charming personality. But a few episodes in, he turns into the obsessive stalker they warn you about. From his dead-serious stares that creep on your skin to his overly poetic narrations that look hilarious when juxtaposed with his actions, he has become the ultimate meme palette for over-the-top dramatic reactions to everyday things.

The memes often parody stalker syndrome, social media obsession, and justifying red flag behaviours. The You character became the go-to meme for jokes about stalking your crush on social media. Hailed as the gaslighting king, Joe is never without a soft smile. Yet, the best was the bookstore Joe vs basement Joe.

Will Byers from Stranger Things

Will Byers has long been the punching bag of Stranger Things. From spending an entire season kidnapped, even when he’s found, he never truly recovers. He’s constantly in a state of panic, consistently sensing doom. While each and every character has found their moments of brief respite, Will’s suffering is more on the endless side. Not to mention, his bowl cut was rather unfortunate.

Some feel the genesis of his depression arc was Will’s haircut. And the therapist jokes were too loud to recover from. Will has often been regarded as the epitome of third wheel energy. And the Internet went haywire with pictures showing Mike and Eleven smiling together while Will stares into the void. It’s perhaps when you realise the Upside Down is less painful than being a third wheel.

Hannah Kanhwald from Dark

Hannah Kanhwald was the prime target for Troll-a-palooza online. While you may assume she’s harmless, she literally caused generational trauma across the multiverse just because she couldn’t get over her high school crush. She turns out to be a villain in every timeline, even without trying. Constantly plays the victim card in Dark while ruining everything. Has a god-tier delusional level, but even you’ve got to bow down to the queen of petty.

She turned Ulrich’s rejection into a trail of vengeance for his bloodline. Hannah struggles with boundaries and a moral compass? She’s never really heard what that’s about. Everyone in Winden has their own struggles, whether it’s time loops, lost children, or quantum paradoxes. But Hannah? All she cares about is her feelings. From stealing identities to ending up as the problem in every timeline, she has a petty spree. And it’s only natural that all of these served gold memes.

Arturo Román from Money Heist

Have you met a character and hated them so much that they ended up being meme-worthy? That’s Arturo Román for you. One of the most universally hated characters of all time, Arturo, the Money Heist character, is a recipe for man-made disaster. He has no holds barred. Will literally give a monologue amid a deadly hostage crisis. Always pretending to be the hero when he’s not. Arturo is the person nobody really asked for.

Somehow, he manages to get worse every season. His entire personality is all about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s literally that person who makes you want to skip scenes. As a walking red flag, he’ll give you ten reasons why not to be like Arturo.

Betty Cooper from Riverdale

Betty Cooper looks like the sweet blonde girl next door, just with a serial killer gene. Has a passion for solving murders, but so much so, she would rather solve a double homicide than go see a therapist. Then, there’s the dark Betty energy that moonlights on days. You’ll find countless memes online contrasting her innocent outlook with her darker side. And she reeks of that “I can fix him” attitude when she can barely mend herself.

She’s literally someone who will stick with a walking red flag just because he gave a green light seven years before. So, you’ll also find plenty of funny memes about her on-again and off-again relationship with Jughead. She’s obsessed with a murder board with red lines, and she’ll always be that “too smart to be here” friend. But then again, she’s just another high school student.
