Five Netflix movies to watch if you loved ‘Why Did I Get Married Again?’
Back in 2007, Tyler Perry made Why Did I Get Married? and took what was supposed to be a couples’ getaway and made what looked like a marital stress test out of it because once those doors closed, the relationships that looked solid from the outside started cracking! Then, in 2010, Why Did I Get Married Too? sent the same group to the Bahamas… and, as you can imagine, they brought back the old baggage.
Now, sixteen years later, Tyler Perry is going back to that same well with Why Did I Get Married Again? except this time, the couples are older with grown children, and the choices their next generation is carrying are the consequences of those choices.
Marcus and Angela travel to Italy for their daughter Jasmine’s wedding, where the old group comes together again… because apparently history knows how to pack a suitcase.
Netflix, luckily, has a bunch of films that carry these complicated relationships, and if that’s your thing, these five movies are perfect for a marathon.

Madea’s Destination Wedding (Tyler Perry, 2025)
Starting with a Tyler Perry masterpiece from 2025, Madea has been causing family trouble on screen for two decades, and Madea’s Destination Wedding became her 13th film. This time, Brian and his ex-wife Debrah learn that their daughter Tiffany is engaged to a rapper she met on a yacht… with the wedding two weeks away! So the family is off to the Bahamas. That puts the film close to Why Did I Get Married Again?, where a daughter’s wedding makes the older generation question what they know about love.
Brian and Debrah spend the trip wondering whether Tiffany understands the commitment she is making, while Madea appoints herself judge and jury. Beneath the comedy, the point is simple: once family gets involved and marriage becomes everybody’s business. Good thing that the next film takes that pressure out of the family and moves it into friendship with equal force.
Love, Sex and 30 Candles (Stephina Zwane, 2023)
Turning 30 comes with enough baggage, right? Now think about finding out that your friends have been keeping secrets that could split the group apart. That is the mess at the heart of Love, Sex and 30 Candles, which follows Dikeledi, Nolwazi, Linda and Sade across the year they reach that milestone. With romantic choices being hard to compartmentalise as they are, and on top of that, old partners re-entering the picture! Of course at some point the trust inside the friendship starts to fray.
The film comes from Angela Makholwa’s novel The 30th Candle, and you can feel the room in the way these relationships unfold. Dikeledi gets pulled toward the father of her child and the promises she has heard before, while Sade’s engagement raises a question that is hard to ignore: how much of yourself should marriage cost? And that is the sting. This is not a wedding story. It is about reaching the point where you have to ask whether commitment feels like love… or whether it has turned into compromise.
The Wedding Party (Kemi Adetiba, 2016)
After watching Why Did I Get Married Again? if the first thought in your head was about families making weddings stressful, then you need to watch The Wedding Party because it’ll tell you how it’s really done. Kemi Adetiba’s Nollywood hit premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and became Nigeria’s highest-grossing film at the time. And here is a fun twist: Banky Wellington and Adesua Etomi, who play Dunni and Dozie, went on to marry off-screen. Cute, right? Well, their characters do not get such an easy ride.
Dunni and Dozie are trying to make it through a lavish Lagos wedding while their parents butt heads and Dozie’s ex threatens to throw a spanner in the works. Sound familiar? Like Why Did I Get Married Again?, the wedding stops belonging to the couple the minute the family gets involved. And of course there is the ex problem. Why won’t there be? That’s how you spice things up.
Resort to Love (Steven K. Tsuchida, 2021)
A tropical resort sounds like the perfect place to get your life back on track, right? Well, not quite for Erica. Her music career has gone sideways, so she takes a gig in Mauritius and soon learns she has been hired to sing at the wedding of her ex-fiancé, Jason. That is awkward enough, but Beverly, the woman he is marrying, has no idea Erica once planned a future with him. Then Jason’s brother Caleb starts getting close to her, and now the whole thing has more twists than a Stephen King novel.
Produced by Alicia Keys, Resort to Love is really about Erica figuring out whether she still loves Jason or just misses the future she once pictured with him. That is why it works so well on this list. The wedding does not cause the old feelings; it just brings them back to the surface.
A Madea Homecoming (Tyler Perry, 2022)
Ahh, another Madea movie, but no wedding this time, thank goodness! A Madea Homecoming starts with a college graduation, but if you know Madea, you know a family gathering is never the right option if you want peace. Madea’s great-grandson Tim is graduating, so the family piles into the house, and before long Laura’s divorce from Richard becomes everybody’s concern. You know how these things go: one person brings up the past, and then opinions chime in just to turn it into a full-blown argument.
The 2022 film also marked Madea’s Netflix debut and brought Mrs Brown’s Boys into Perry’s world through Brendan O’Carroll’s Agnes Brown. Under all the jokes sits a familiar Perry idea: in this family, marriage is never just between two people.
