Five gripping thrillers to binge on Netflix right now

People do adore the idea that life is under control; they like to maintain their calendars, doors locked, and plans made with confidence, all while they barely give a thought to some dreadful interruption. Thrillers live for that moment, dear reader, because nothing trembles the nerves quite like watching certainty slip out of somebody’s hands.

And once control is gone, every choice becomes a life-and-death decision, especially in our list’s picks. A character thinks they understand the rules, and just then somebody changes them without permission.

That is where suspense earns its keep, because as an audience, we get dragged into the same uncertainty and start questioning each move before the character has even made it.

Netflix has plenty of these thrillers, and these five are some of the best Netflix has offered us in recent years.

Five gripping thrillers to binge on Netflix right now

Animals (Ben Affleck, 2026)

Ben Affleck couldn’t have picked a worse time for a family crisis in Animals because his Mark Kimball’s son is kidnapped just days before the Los Angeles mayoral election, which he seems to be losing by a few points. And his wife, Abigail, is having a serious affair at the same time, so he is basically screwed from all ends. And as if that weren’t enough, the couple is hit with a ransom demand, leaving them scrambling to find the money while wondering who on earth they can trust.

Affleck directs and co-wrote this Netflix film where Steven Yeun plays Mark’s campaign aide, and Gillian Anderson joins the mess as a fixer demanding answers from the family. Oh, this lot have got their hands full! The cast even spent weeks rehearsing inside the Los Angeles house used for filming, which ought to make all that suspicion and tension feel nothing but real.

The Woman in Cabin 10 (Simon Stone, 2025)

Ruth Ware gave The Woman in Cabin 10 a thrilling premise from the start, and you can tell that by the title of the film. It starts with journalist Lo Blacklock, who gets invited on a luxurious yacht, and while she is feeling pretty out of place among all the snooty rich people, she sees a woman thrown overboard from the yacht. Out of everybody, she’s the one who witnesses it! The already unwelcome guest.

Of course she raises the alarm; however, she gets told nobody is missing. Sorry, what? Keira Knightley’s Lo knows what she saw, but everyone around her insists Cabin 10 was empty. And she cannot grab her coat and run either, because they are stuck in the middle of the bloody ocean. Simon Stone directs the adaptation of Ware’s 2016 bestseller, and the more you try to figure it out on your own, the more you get stuck with this one.

A House of Dynamite (Kathryn Bigelow, 2025)

Kathryn Bigelow spent eight years away from feature films and chose nuclear panic for her comeback. A House of Dynamite starts with an unidentified missile heading for the United States and gives everyone about 18 minutes before impact. Eighteen! That is enough time to burn a coffee, not figure out who fired a nuclear weapon and whether retaliation might make an awful situation catastrophic. So yes, we are starting with max-level panic in this.

Idris Elba plays the US president, with Rebecca Ferguson among the officials caught in the crisis as the film follows people across the government trying to work out what happens next. Military and government consultants helped shape the procedures, which gives the panic its weight because nobody has time for Hollywood heroics when a decision could cost millions of lives.

Carry-On (Jaume Collet-Serra, 2024)

Did you know that all that LAX chaos shown in Carry-On was shot inside the old terminal at New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong Airport, which the production turned into its own version of the Los Angeles airport, while TSA advisers helped the cast get the security work right? It starts with Ethan, a TSA officer who gets blackmailed by a mysterious traveller, played by Jason Bateman, into letting a dangerous package through, with his pregnant girlfriend Nora, played by Sofia Carson, used as leverage.

Now take a second and imagine yourself as the officer before you figure out what Ethan does in the movie. Raise the alarm and Nora pays for it; follow orders, and who knows what gets through security. Jaume Collet-Serra directs the Netflix film, and once Ethan starts looking for a way out, the whole airport becomes one giant trap.

Rebel Ridge (Jeremy Saulnier, 2024)

Jeremy Saulnier came very close to passing on Aaron Pierre for Rebel Ridge because, at 6-foot-3, he thought Pierre might look too intimidating for Terry Richmond. Then they had a Zoom call and, well… scrap that concern. Pierre is a big bloke, sure, but the real draw is how much control he gives Terry, because you can see the anger bubbling while everyone around him keeps giving him reasons to lose it.

Terry is a former Marine heading to Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin when local police knock him off his bike and take the cash, which drags him into a fight with a department run by Don Johnson’s Chief Sandy Burnne. AnnaSophia Robb plays court employee Summer McBride, who helps Terry dig into what is going on. That makes every confrontation hit harder, because you know he can handle himself… the question is how much more nonsense he is willing to take.
