Five gangster movies to watch on Netflix after ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man didn’t just make waves on Netflix; it reminded the world what the real appeal of gangster movies truly is. Regardless of how strictly illegal the gangland endeavours may be, these mobsters live on a moral high ground. They put friends and family on a pedestal, protect their community, and most importantly, make a better living than the so-called saints of society.
This is why the fascination with gangster movies and shows lives on. And we’re not here to complain. In fact, we just wanted to vet whether the fire sparked by The Immortal Man has been reduced to ashes or if the movie was fuel for the flames.
In case of the latter, well, congratulations, because we’re on the same boat. Although there’s a Peaky Blinders sequel series in the making, it’s still way down the line.
So, if you want your one-stop solution for all things Peaky Blinders-like, here are five gangster movies to watch on Netflix once you’re done with The Immortal Man.
Five gangster movies to stream after Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man
The Irishman (Martin Scorsese, 2019)
Based on Charles Brandt’s 2004 book I Heard You Paint Houses, The Irishman is a gripping gangster film, directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. The epic crime drama, currently streaming on Netflix, is told through the narration of elderly Frank Sheeran, a World War II veteran, who details his journey and evolution from a truck driver skimming meat deliveries to a mob hitman working under Russel Bufalino.
Set in 1950s Philadelphia, The Irishman captures Bufalino’s influence on Frank, who eventually introduces him to Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa, sparking a close alliance leading to Frank’s promotion as Hoffa’s bodyguard and trusted confidante. But with Hoffa’s reckless schemes standing in the way of the Mafia’s interests, it is not long after that Frank’s offered to betray his best friend.
Casino (Martin Scorsese, 1995)
Adapted from Nicholas Pileggi’s nonfiction book, Casino: Love and Honour in Las Vegas, Casino is a classic crime drama movie, currently streaming on Netflix, to fill your post-The Immortal Man blues. Serving as the eighth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, the intense movie offers viewers a glimpse of the Mafia’s dominance in the 1970s and 80s Las Vegas.
Casino primarily follows Sam “Ace” Rothstein, a skilled gambler, who is sent to oversee the Teamsters-funded Tangiers Casino by the Chicago Outfit. Although he brings a quick boom to business, when Ace’s childhood friend, Nicky Santoro, enters the scene for the betterment of the operation, he instead brings legal chaos, drawing inevitable FBI attention and causing uncontrollable conflict.
Gun City (Dani de la Torre, 2018)
Set in 1921 Barcelona, Gun City, the 2018 Spanish-French action thriller, captures an era of intense political tension, in which corrupt police, influential gangsters, and local anarchists go head-to-head for control. The plot kicks off when there’s an alarming theft of a massive shipment of automatic military weapons from a train, sparking a 72-hour ultimatum to find them before the military takes over the city. Agent Anibal Uriarte is sent from Madrid to investigate the theft, reckoning on the urgency of the situation.
Gun City explores the political turmoil plaguing the city while simultaneously examining the investigation Anibal is assigned. While Anibal’s arrival is expected to hasten the process of recovery, what he discovers is a whole cobweb of corruption, involving not only the anarchists but local detectives who have shaken hands with the “Baron,” a local and powerful gangster who will implore you to read between the lines.
The Outfit (Graham Moore, 2022)
Serving as Graham Moore’s critically acclaimed directorial debut, The Outfit is a psychological thriller about Leonard, a master English tailor living in 1950s Chicago, whose shop doubles as a safe house run by a ruthless Irish mob family. Although Leonard has grown used to his shop’s back room being used by the dangerous Boyles, who drop off messages and dirty money, one night, he finds himself at gunpoint by Richie Boyle and his enforcer, putting him in a terrible spot.
Having been shot in the abdomen, Richie forces Leonard to treat him. But if you think that’s a spoiler, you’re probably not ready for the plot twists awaiting The Outfit. Surely, the film follows a maze-like structure to illicit confusion; all we can suggest is keep an eye out for Leonard because he’s more than he meets the eye.
The Highwaymen (John Lee Hancock, 2019)
Lastly, to conclude the gangster movie marathon on Netflix, we have The Highwaymen to pull the curtains. The period crime drama reportedly tells the true, never-before-heard story of Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, two former Texas Rangers who were dragged out of retirement to hunt down the infamous pair of criminals Bonnie and Clyde in 1934.
The Highwaymen follow the ageing lawmen on their pursuit of Bonnie and Clyde across several states, focusing on the intense investigative process. Set in the Depression era, the movie also highlights the public romanticisation of the duo, who were often viewed as heroes, despite the clear contrast with the brutal reality of their actions.
