Five detective movies to binge before Enola Holmes 3
Enola Holmes (Harry Bradbeer, 2020)
Before Enola Holmes 3 arrives on July 1st, seize the time left for a trip down memory lane to where it all began: Enola Holmes. The 2020 mystery movie, based on Nancy Springer’s first novel in The Enola Holmes Mysteries, stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular character, the teenage sister of Victorian-era detective Sherlock Holmes and Mycroft Holmes. The mystery adventure introduces viewers to the brilliant sister when her mother, Eudoria, vanishes on the morning of Enola’s 16th birthday.
While already at a loss for direction, Enola has to piece together the clues left behind mother in the form of some cryptic gifts. But when her brothers arrive shortly after, Mycroft decides to send her off to a strict finishing school. However, Enola, true to her rebellious nature, doesn’t think twice before going against her legal guardian, embarking on her own quest to find her mother in London, which inadvertently tangles her in a political conspiracy surrounding a runaway count.
Enola Holmes 2 (Harry Bradbeer, 2022)
Serving as the second entry and the sequel to the 2020 movie, Enola Holmes 2 sees Millie Bobby Brown return as the titular sleuth. However, contrary to its predecessor, the 2022 movie is not based on one of Nancy Springer’s books but is inspired by the real-life matchgirls’ strike. In the second movie, Enola opens her own detective agency, initially struggling to find clients due to her age, until Bessie walks in with a request and her very first formal case.
Bessie is a young match factory girl whose sister, Sarah, has mysteriously gone missing. Enola Holmes 2 follows Enola on her increasingly dangerous investigation, which leads her into a complex web of corruption and deceit. Meanwhile, Sherlock tackles an intricate blackmail and embezzlement case and for those wondering why that matters? Well, the siblings eventually realise their respective cases are actually unexpectedly deeply entwined.
The Thursday Murder Club (Chris Columbus, 2025)
Although the wait for Enola Holmes 3 might pinch all the more once you’re done with the recap marathon of the franchise, all we can say is that the binge session isn’t over yet. Of course, it’s hard to summon the teen detective before July; the same doesn’t apply to the other detectives lurking on Netflix. So, once you’re done with the second instalment of the detective franchise, carry on the marathon with The Thursday Murder Club, spotlighting the most unexpected crew of sleuths.
Set in a retirement community, The Thursday Murder Club, which adapts Richard Osman’s acclaimed novel, follows four eclectic retirees who gather weekly to solve cold cases for fun. But their casual sleuthing soon turns into a real, high-stakes adventure when a property developer is murdered close to their home, forcing the amateur detectives into a suspenseful whodunit that’s anything but harmless.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson, 2025)
Speaking of sleuths, while Netflix has quite a few iconic names in its roster, including Enola Holmes, how can we ever forget the super witty Benoit Blanc? In the third film of the Knives Out series, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Daniel Craig reprises his role as the master detective, investigating the mysterious passing of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks at a rural New York parish where the primary suspect is a young priest with a boxing past, Father Jud.
Although his vastly different approach to faith constantly put him in direct conflict with Wicks, the friction specifically doesn’t look good for Father Jud when the murder takes place. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery follows Blanc’s desperate mission to prove the young boxer-turned-priest’s innocence, which sends him down a rabbit hole of inheritance conspiracy.
7 Women and a Murder (Alessandro Genovesi, 2021)
Lastly, before Enola Holmes’s return, don’t forget to tune into 7 Women and a Murder if you haven’t already. The Italian comedic mystery murder, inspired by the French play 8 Femmes, centres on seven women trapped inside an isolated, snowed-in Italian mansion, who must figure out which of them mercilessly killed the family patriarch, Marcello, during the joyous Christmas holidays. For those wondering, why trapped?
Well, with a terrible blizzard raging, all phone lines are cut, the car is sabotaged, and worst of all, the gates are locked. Left with no option but to investigate each other, 7 Women and a Murder follows these women, who, in an attempt to find out the killer, unearth the motives each and every one in the room carries. As accusations start piling up and physical fights break out, naturally, everyone’s skeletons come tumbling out of the closet.
