First trailer for Netflix’s ‘Rebel Ridge’ has arrived

After massive hype over the past few months, viewers are getting their first look at the new Netflix thrillride, Rebel Ridge.

The latest Netflix adventure follows in a long line of crime-focused movies debuting on the streaming service, such as Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. Jeremy Saulnier is the director of the project, having previously been known for 2013’s Blue Ruin as well as the A24-distributed movie, Green Room.

The story follows the tale of Terry Richmond, played by Aaron Pierre, who goes to the small town of Shelby Springs to bail out his cousin. Upon arrival, though, Richmond gets his life’s savings seized by law enforcement, which leads to him having to battle against the police force to free his cousin and save himself in the process.

Standing in his way is Chief Sandy Burnne, the leader of the corrupt police force in Shelby Springs With the help of Anna SophiaRobb’s Summer McBride, Richmond seeks not only to clear his cousin’s name but to expose the police force for what they really are.

This is one of two major projects that Pierre is working on at the moment. In addition to the action thriller, the Old actor has been putting the finishing touches on the Barry Jenkins film Mufasa: The Lion King for Disney, in which he plays the voice of the formidable father of Simba.

When discussing the film, Saulnier discussed the idea stemming from the way that everyday people confront various systems in their lives, saying, “For this movie, I wanted to tap into how the rest of us react to said systems, how infuriating they can be—from corrupt politicians down to the endless loop of a customer service call gone wrong.”

While many have been excited to see what the Netflix drama offers, the trailer has also been a touch familiar to many seasoned movie veterans. Given the subject matter about a man who comes to town and goes against the traditional system in his own way, viewers have also noticed that the scenario resembles Sylvester Stallone’s 1980s action-thriller Rambo.

Saulnier has also stated that that era of cinema was a great inspiration behind this project, stating, “I dig grounded ’80s and ’90s action films that not only deliver on spectacle, but succeed in tying on-screen mayhem to a real and true emotional component. Smaller scale, bigger impact. Less veneer, less artificiality.”

Rebel Ridge premieres on Netflix on September 6th.
