Exploring the filming locations ‘The Diplomat’ season two
The second season of The Diplomat, created by Debora Cahn, is now available to stream on Netflix. With the show taking Keri Russell’s US ambassador, Kate Wyler, across various impressive locations, you might be wondering where certain scenes were filmed.
Season two comes after the success of its original run of eight episodes last year, which earned a string of nominations from the likes of the Emmys and the Golden Globes. Russell also won an accolade from the Hollywood Critics Association TV Awards for ‘Best Actress in a Streaming Series, Drama’.
With Russell appearing alongside the likes of Rufus Sewell, Rory Kinnear, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Celia Imrie and Allison Janney, the show is full of thrills as the ambassador deals with international relations alongside various characters.
Over the course of the episodes, we see characters travel across countries like England, Scotland, France, and the United States. But where did the crew film these scenes?
Some episodes were shot on location, while studios were used to replicate places that couldn’t easily be filmed in, like the White House and 10 Downing Street. Still, there were many gorgeous buildings that the cast were able to film in, such as St Paul’s Cathedral.
A funeral sequence was filmed inside the historic building, with E.J. Richards, the supervising location manager, telling Netflix Tudum, “Nobody has ever closed St. Paul’s for four full days, which we did. Not even the queen.”
The crew also managed to use exterior shots of the real Foreign Office, although the interiors were shot at Westminster’s One Great George Street venue.
Kate’s home that she shares with her husband Hal is actually Hertfordshire’s opulent Wrotham Park, while another old place of residence, Scotland’s Inveraray Castle was used when the ambassador meets with Nicol Trowbridge, the UK Prime Minister. Argyll’s Ardkinglas House was also used for several scenes.
As for Kate’s office, exterior shots of the real US Embassy were carefully used, while the inside was filmed in a studio in London. However, we do get a glimpse inside the lobby in one sequence.
Additionally, the grandiose banquet held by Trowbridge is a visitable location. It was shot inside of Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, while Salisbury’s Wilton House is used to show the outside of the building.
The second season of The Diplomat has just arrived on Netflix, so if you don’t feel like watching a scary movie this Halloween, perhaps you’d prefer to binge this political thriller instead.
