Netflix subscribers have grown an appetite for the Western genre, and the streaming giant is about to give them just what they want with a new show, The Abandons.

First announced in November 2021, the production of the Western drama began on May 14th, 2024, in Calgary, as was confirmed by showrunner Kurt Sutter on Instagram. Yet, most recently, Netflix peeled back the curtain on the highly anticipated details, including exclusive first-look images and a release date.

The Abandons on Netflix revolves around a group of diverse rebel families living on the margins of society in 1850s Washington State. These renegade families join forces to revolt against corruption in an attempt to save their land. The upcoming series revolves around these individuals who walk over the thin ice between survival and law, the aftermath of violence, and the all-consuming power of secrets “to keep what’s theirs.”

What is the plot?

The Abandons on Netflix will transport viewers to 1854 Washington Territory, centring on the matriarchs of two increasingly diverse families: one underscored by wealth and privilege, tied by blood, while the other is a found family of outcasts and orphans tied by unconditional love and necessity. Despite their profound differences, the families’ fates entwine, thanks to two crimes, a devastating secret, an ill-fated love, and a land they treasure.

This collision chronicles the American struggle of the withs and withouts, ultimately setting the stage for a Western drama rooted in love, betrayal, and survival. “This first chapter of The Abandons is a classic American story – the frontier, two families – both at war and in love with each other, a battle over who owns the land and who makes the rules,” said executive producer Chris Keyser in a statement to Tudum.

Who is in the cast?

The two matriarchs starring in The Abandons on Netflix are Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson as Fiona Nolan and Constance Van Ness, respectively. Nick Robinson as Elias Teller, Diana Silvers as Dahlia Teller, Lucas Till as Garrett Van Ness, Lamar Johnson as Albert Mason, Aisling Fraciosi as Trisha Van Ness, and Natalia del Riego as Lilla Belle complete the main cast.

Netflix has yet to release a trailer for the upcoming Western series, The Abandons. However, it did unveil the first-look images on October 1st.
