Everything you need to know about the second and final part of ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’
Following the well-received launch of the first part of Nobel Prize-winning Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s best-selling One Hundred Years of Solitude adaptation last year, Netflix is finally returning with the second and final part next year.
So, in case you were preparing a list of what to keep an eye out for in 2026, add this one before you forget.
The upcoming part, which will serve as the show’s last, consists of eight concluding episodes. The episodes are expected to unveil Macondo and the Buendía family’s destiny.
While Netflix also dropped some brand-new teaser art, for those curious about what to expect from the second part, here’s all you need to know about the final volume of One Hundred Years of Solitude.
What is One Hundred Years of Solitude about?
One Hundred Years of Solitude, the Netflix adaptation of Márquez’s critically acclaimed realist novel, revolves around cousins José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, who tie the knot, despite their parents’ aversion, which leads to their departure from the village in search of a new home. Their journey, accompanied by friends and voyagers, ends with the discovery of a utopian town on the banks of a river of prehistoric stones that they baptise Macondo.
Various generations of the Buendía family shape the fate of this mythical town, each tortured by insanity, ill-fated romance, “a bloody and absurd war, and a terrible curse that condemns them, without hope, to 100 years of solitude.”
For those unaware, Márquez’s novel, originally published in 1967, has sold over 50million copies and has been translated into more than 40 languages. Regarded as one of the most ambitious productions by Netflix in Latin American history, One Hundred Years of Solitude is shot in Spanish and filmed in Márquez’s native Colombia with the support of the author’s family.
“Directing this project has been both a challenge and an adventure. After all, in life, taking risks is necessary to give meaning to what we do. When diving into the adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, my intention was to create something authentic that carries the stature of an international production, because the story deserves it,” Alex Garcia López, who directed the first, second, third, seventh, and eighth episodes, told Netflix.
So, what will the second part be about?
Despite the truce and the signing of the Treaty of Neerlandia, peace still feels like a far-off dream for Macondo. Afraid of Colonel Aureliano Buendía’s threats, the Conservatives scheme an attack, which, by chance, brings Fernanda del Carpio from Bogota to the town. She ties the knot with Aureliano Segundo, giving Úrsula Iguarán her first legitimate heirs.
As for the other twin, José Arcadio Segundo, who’s completely invested in Buendía’s manuscripts, he makes the patriarch’s dream come true of connecting Macondo with the rest of the world. The railroad leads to the banana company, which results in the town’s downfall, fulfilling Úrsula Iguarán’s curse. “The races condemned to 100 years of solitude were not granted a second opportunity on earth.”
Who’s in the cast?
Marleyda Soto will return to play the adult Úrsula Iguarán, and Claudio Cataño will reprise his role as Colonel Aureliano Buendía. In addition to them, One Hundred Years of Solitude part two will feature Ángela Cano, Emmanuel Restrepo, Estefanía Piñeres, María Adelaida Puerta, Emiliano Pernía, Juanita Molina, Laura Taylor, Obeida Benavides, Julián Román, and Carla Baratta.
When will the second part be released on Netflix?
The second part of the Netflix adaptation arrives in August 2026. Till then, the first part is available for streaming on the platform.
