Everything you need to know about the return of ‘Star Search’ on Netflix

The iconic talent competition series, Star Search, is completely ready for a comeback on Netflix. The original show saw the rise of high-profile names we know all too well now, from Britney Spears and Queen Bey to Adam Sandler and Conan O’Brien, from 1993 to 1995.

With its return on Netflix, Star Search has acquired an innovative new format, raising the stakes with its “live on Netflix” tag, which allows viewers to vote in real-time for the first time.

On November 25th, Netflix took a step ahead, announcing the new host of Star Search: Anthony Anderson.

While the greatest talent competition in the world has already launched global icons previously, Anderson will now lead the reboot to welcome the stars of tomorrow and here’s everything you need to know.

What’s new about Star Search?

The original Star Search helped make some of the biggest artists in entertainment household names, including Dave Chappelle, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake, among others. The reboot will now follow in the footsteps of that very legacy, albeit with an expansive category of performers, comprising musicians, comedians, dancers, and kids’ acts. These participants will compete on a live stage.

As Netflix puts it, “What hasn’t changed is the emotional undercurrent that defined the show; what’s new is the immediacy. Every performance, every reveal, every elimination happens in real time, and is powered by audience votes, creating the kind of high-stakes momentum that can shift a performer’s career in seconds.”

About the new host: Anthony Anderson

Anthony Anderson has taken the saddle of guiding viewers through each week’s live performances and eliminations with the Netflix reboot of Star Search. Speaking of the opportunity, he told Tudum, “I’m super excited to host this new chapter of Star Search and to introduce such an iconic format to a whole new generation, especially on a global stage like Netflix.”

Expect an extensive range of performances and surprises waiting for you as the new era of the legendary talent competition series arrives in a few.

Who produces the new Star Search?

Jesse Collins Entertainment, which is behind Rhythm + Flow, the Primetime Emmy Awards, the American Music Awards, the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and Hollywood Squares, will produce the series. Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, and Elaine Metaxas serve as executive producers.

When does it premiere on Netflix?

Star Search is scheduled to premiere live on Netflix on January 13th, 2026. The episodes can be streamed live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9.00pm ET/6.00pm PT.
