Everything you need to know about the new Netflix Idris Elba movie: ‘Luther’

Everyone, stay calm; Idris Elba is officially putting the coat back on. Luther is returning with a brand-new Netflix movie, and honestly, can you deal with it, because we cannot! London is about to get messy again, and there is only one man dramatic (and strong) enough to fix it: Detective John Luther, aka the most stylishly stressed man in television history.

If you’ve watched even five minutes of Luther, you know this isn’t your neat little British whodunnit. It is violent, it is emotional, it is basically everything you expect from a typical Elba action film. Luther doesn’t just chase killers… he dives headfirst into their nightmares. Every time he says, “I’ve got this under control,” you know he absolutely does not. And that’s exactly why we love him.

This new movie picks up after Luther: The Fallen Sun and reunites Idris Elba with Ruth Wilson (our favourite genius) and Dermot Crowley (the only man patient enough to still work with Luther). Director Jamie Payne and writer Neil Cross are also back, which means we’re getting the same dark, obsessive energy that made the series so addictive.

We don’t know much about the plot yet, but let’s be real… Does it even matter? Luther’s back, London’s in danger, and someone is about to make the worst mistake of their life by underestimating him. Here is everything you need to know and more.

What is the plot?

Here is the deal: a wave of brutal murders hits London, and once again, there is only one man for the job. The thing is, Luther is not exactly in the best place (mentally or legally). He is off the force, officially done with all that detective business… until he isn’t. Because, of course, someone calls him back when things go completely off the rails.

The story picks up after The Fallen Sun, and it sounds like Luther is walking straight back into trouble. The killer this time isn’t just clever; they’re calculated, and that always gets under his skin. The more he investigates, the blurrier that line between justice and obsession gets.

Who’s in the cast?

The holy trinity of Luther is back: Idris Elba as the detective, Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan and Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk, the detective who tries to keep his sanity while dealing with Luther’s mess. Together, they’re the heart of this world. It’s basically the dream team reforming for one more morally questionable adventure. And yes, more cast members will be announced soon, but even if it were just these three, we’d still watch it twice.

Is there a trailer available?

Not yet. The film’s still in production, which means Netflix is keeping everything under wraps for now. But if the last movie was any indication, expect something dark and heavy on the London skyline at night.

When does Luther release on Netflix?

The new Luther movie doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, but given Netflix’s timeline, it could drop sometime in 2026. Whenever it arrives, fans of the franchise can expect more mind games and more scenes that make you question whether Luther’s saving London or destroying it one case at a time.
