Fresh off her Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Michelle Yeoh is set to dazzle audiences once again, this time in Netflix’s upcoming series, The Brothers Sun.
Created by Brad Falchuk and Byron Wu, the show is slated to premiere the first week of January. It promises to be an uber-fun experience with its blend of action, dark comedy, and family drama.
The phenomenal Yeoh will be seen in yet another fearsome matriarch role in the series. She will play mother to Justin Chien’s Charles Sun and Sam Song Li’s Bruce Sun, who belong to a family of gangsters.
Falchuk told Tudum how they are doing an “extreme version” of family values because “they’re a crime family and there are people shooting at them and trying to kill them. But the conflicts they’re having — the problems they’re having internally, the emotional problems — are very, very universal.”
What is The Brothers Sun about?
The Brothers Sun revolves around the life of Bruce Sun, an average Californian whose world is turned upside down when his older brother, Charles Sun, visits them from Taipei, Taiwan. Unaware of his family’s criminal legacy, Bruce must adapt to the dangerous underworld of the Taiwanese triad, all while dealing with the aftermath of his father’s assassination.
As Taipei’s deadliest gangster families and a new rising faction go head-to-head for dominance, Charles, Bruce, and their mother, Eileen ‘Mama’ Sun, must get over their differences and figure out what family truly mean before “one of their countless enemies kills them all.”
The show explores themes of power, loyalty, and the burdens of familial legacy against the vibrant and dangerous backdrops of Los Angeles and Taipei.
Writer and executive producer Byron Wu also dished on the delicious mouthwatering medley of food that will play a significant role in The Brothers Sun, “You can’t tell an Asian story without food being involved because, especially with family, there’s just no way to separate the two,” said Wu. “[Eating] really is such an integral part of the family unit that it had to be there because otherwise, it would be not truthful.”
Food stylist Melissa McCorley drew inspiration from traditional Chinese cuisine to create the elaborate meals on the show. She incorporated both home-style family dishes and formal gourmet presentations to create an authentic culinary experience.
