Everything you need to know about Ryan Reynolds and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s ‘Eloise’

Ryan Reynolds starring in an Amy Sherman-Palladino movie was not on anyone’s 2025 bingo card, but it’s happening, and we are obsessed. Netflix is bringing the Eloise books to life in a new live-action adaptation, and the combination of Reynolds and the Gilmore Girls creator feels more than just perfect.

Sherman-Palladino, who is known for her fast-paced, witty dialogue, is writing and directing the film, which means Eloise is about to get a serious personality upgrade. Reynolds’s role hasn’t been revealed yet, but if his filmography has taught us anything, it’s that he is incapable of playing it safe.

The movie will introduce newcomer Mae Schenk as Eloise, the six-year-old whirlwind who lives at New York’s Plaza Hotel and somehow manages to cause trouble wherever she goes. It might look like a kids’ story for now, but Sherman-Palladino doesn’t really do simple, so you can expect something a lot sharper than pink tutus and room service.

Production is going to kick off later this year in London, so it might be a while before we see the finished film. Despite that, the team alone is enough to get people talking. Here is everything we know so far about Eloise.

What is the plot of Eloise?

Well, Netflix hasn’t dropped the official synopsis yet, but if you have ever met Eloise in book form, you know the drill. She is a six-year-old who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York and spends her days eavesdropping on adults. This girl manages to turn every quiet hallway into a disaster zone. In a modern context, she is the kind of kid who’d probably have a viral TikTok account if she were real.

Amy Sherman-Palladino’s version is said to be a fresh take on Kay Thompson’s original stories, mixing the book’s old-school vibe with her fast-paced, character-driven humour. So while Eloise will still be the same little menace running around the Plaza, expect sharper dialogue and fun modern twists.

Who’s in the cast?

Ryan Reynolds is the big headline here, though Netflix is keeping the details of his role quite locked up. We can’t say whether he is playing a frazzled hotel manager or a bemused parent, or someone entirely unexpected. We might not know his role yet, but one thing is for sure: he’s about to make Eloise a lot louder (and probably funnier).

The real star, though, is newcomer Mae Schenk, who is making her film debut as Eloise herself. She is already being called “a discovery”.

Behind the scenes, Amy Sherman-Palladino is writing and directing, and her husband and creative partner, Daniel Palladino, is producing. So yes, the Gilmore Girls and Mrs Maisel DNA runs deep here. The rest of the cast hasn’t been revealed yet, but given Sherman-Palladino’s knack for sharp picks, you can expect a mix of fresh faces and familiar names.

Is there a trailer available?

Not yet. Netflix is still keeping Eloise behind the velvet rope. The film is just heading into production later this year, so a trailer probably won’t show up until mid-2026. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from getting way too excited already. Between Amy Sherman-Palladino’s signature dialogues and Ryan Reynolds’s never-off sarcasm, the internet is basically predicting a crossover between Gilmore Girls and Deadpool (and honestly, we’d watch that).

When does Eloise release on Netflix?

Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, but filming is expected to start later this year in London, which means we are probably looking at a late 2026 release.

So for now, all we can do is wait, rewatch Gilmore Girls for comfort, and imagine Ryan Reynolds trying to survive a hotel run by a six-year-old. Something tells us it’ll be worth the wait.
