Everything you need to know about Netflix’s new rom-com ‘She Said Maybe’

So picture this. Your boyfriend plans the whole thing for you. There’s a romantic trip, the big question, and the dream proposal. Except instead of a fairytale moment, he totally fumbles it. Like, not just a little awkward. Full-on crash-and-burn. That is how Netflix’s She Said Maybe kicks off, and honestly, it sets the perfect tone because nothing screams rom-com chaos like a proposal gone wrong.

Netflix just dropped the trailer for this new German-Turkish rom-com. It is glossy, it is dramatic, and it is dripping with the kind of energy that makes you want to cancel all your weekend plans just to raid some snacks, reequate yourself with the dip on your couch and binge away.

For starters, you have got Istanbul rooftops at golden hour, followed by Cappadocia looking like an Instagram filter in real life, and a story that feels equal parts fairytale and family drama. It is not the quiet “meet-cute in a coffee shop” kind of film. This one comes with glam and more secrets than a reality show reunion.

At the centre is Mavi, played by Beritan Balcı. She thinks she is just flying to Turkey for a cute little getaway with her boyfriend, Can (played by Sinan Güleç). He is nervous as he is planning a proposal, and of course, everything blows up in his face. Poor guy never stood a chance. But the trip ends up being about way more than a failed ring moment.

Mavi suddenly discovers she belongs to a wealthy Turkish dynasty (The Princess Diaries, much). Yep, the kind of family you only see in glossy magazines. Think grand villas, power plays, and a tradition-heavy grandmother who is ready to run the show. For Mavi, it is a wild shift. One second, she is a Hamburg girl living a chill, regular life. Next, she is in the middle of a Turkish soap opera with cousins, aunts, uncles, and strangers who all seem to know more about her than she knows about herself.

The best part is that she has to juggle all of this while her boyfriend is still reeling from his botched proposal. Their relationship, which was supposed to level up, is now hanging by a thread and becomes a nagging part of the story. Between family politics, glamorous distractions, and the pull of two completely different worlds, Mavi has choices to make.

Directors Ngo The Chau and Buket Alakuş clearly know what they are doing, as the trailer alone feels cinematic enough to pull you in. With Ipek Zübert writing the script, it leans into the culture clash, the humour, and the heartache all at once.

She Said Maybe is set to drop on Netflix on September 19th, and honestly, the timing is perfect. Just as summer winds down, you get a romantic binge packed with family drama, failed proposals, and Istanbul glamour. This is not just another rom-com. This one feels like the messy group-chat movie night we all secretly live for.
