Cliché or not, rom-coms will never go out of style. Although the drought of rom-coms persists even now, every now and then, Netflix fans the flames of something fresh, hoping to reignite the trend train. This time, it comes with twice the twist, with a magical and a K-drama spin on the genre, thanks to Genie, Make a Wish.

Directed by Lee Byeong-heon and written by Kim Eun-sook, Genie, Make a Wish, brings a mischievous twist on the concept of genie-in-a-bottle. With elements of magic, a potbelly of feel-good moments, and roadblocks just as compelling and otherworldly, this K-fantasy rom-com might just be everything you dreamt of.

Sure, we’ve heard our fair share of genie stories. But this is no Aladdin and Jasmine. And Netflix has conjured a cast reunion so good, you cannot help but get lost in the world of the magical and fantastical.

In case you’re still unaware of what Genie, Make a Wish is all about, here’s a rundown of all you need to know.

What is the story of Genie, Make a Wish?

Genie, Make a Wish tells the story of stoic Ka-young, who has spent her life under the surveillance of her grandmother. The strict guidance has kept her psychopathic tendencies in check. Like every genie does, this one, too, grants her three life-altering wishes. However, having been let loose in a millennium he hasn’t seen before, the genie’s hijinks end up upending Ka-young’s distant life, while falling in love with each other. But soon enough, she finds out that the genie is actually Iblis, AKA Satan, who’s determined to prove that humans are nothing but corruptible. So, if you thought this was going to be just another love story, think again.
