Speaking of Hostage on Netflix, star and executive producer Suranne Jones told Tudum, “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of.” Landing on Netflix had been a dream for Jones. And after back-and-forth discussions about projects beforehand, Jones has finally found what she believes fits like a glove: Hostage. “Hostage was perfect,” she added.

What is the story of Hostage?
Hostage is an upcoming political thriller on Netflix, which follows a delayed state visit and the reasons behind it. With the British prime minister’s husband abducted and the French president victim of a blackmailing ring, two political leaders must make impossible choices in the face of unexpected danger.
As both are trapped in the political pressure cooker, where their careers are on a high-stakes tightrope and their lives tango with danger, they are coerced into forced rivalry. It’s up to the two whether they team up like tag-team champs to sniff out the sinister plot or fall prey to the conspiracies.
Who is in the cast and crew?
Jones, famous for her work in Coronation Street, has joined Hostage as Abigail Dalton. Julie Delpy, from the Before trilogy, stars as Vivienne Toussaint. Both the leads were confirmed in March 2024. The cast additionally includes Corey Mylchreest as Matheo Lewis, Lucian Msamati as Kofi Adomako, Ashley Thomas as Dr Alex Anderson, James Cosmo as Max, Martin McCann, and Jehnny Beth as Adrienne Pelletier.
Matt Charman wrote Hostage and serves as a creator. Meanwhile, Netflix has co-produced the thriller with Binocular Productions.
Is there a trailer available?
Yes! Netflix dropped a teaser trailer for Hostage on July 14th, which shows the British prime minister discovering her husband’s kidnapping.
When does Hostage release?
Hostage will be released on Netflix on August 21st, 2025. Filming began in March 2024 with the working title The Choice. The renewed title for the five-episode limited series was confirmed in January 2025.
