Everything we need to know about Netflix’s 'Black Summer' season 3

Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, Netflix’s Black Summer is an apocalyptic zombie film that garnered quite the cult-following, walking in the footsteps of The Walking Dead. It chronicles the story of a mother named Rose, who undertakes a harrowing journey amidst hordes of zombies, along with a handful of other survivors. All in a bid to find her daughter Anna. In such hostile environments, Rose must use her cunning to make hasty and difficult decisions to survive.

Seasons one and two of Black Summer have been absolutely riveting, with various characters showcasing the human condition, morality, empathy, and struggle to survive. Layered and volatile, each character has a different set of responses to hostile situations, and it is terrifying yet delightful to watch them battle undead adversaries. It is a brutal tale of survival that also boasts of wonderful sets, brilliant cinematography and incredible performances.

Jamie King, who plays the protagonist Rose, gushed over her character. She told Forbes that she could relate to the determination and vulnerability of Rose as a mother desperate to find her daughter as she had been through personal hell in her real life with her son, who was born sick. “There was something about going through that experience where I knew, in that moment—you hear that mothers can lift up cars to save their child—that there is nothing that a mother cannot do. When I read Rose, I knew I was her. I knew that there was nothing a woman cannot do to protect their child.”

As we rewatch the brilliant episodes of season two that ended on an ambiguous note with a nail-biting cliffhanger, here is everything that we know about season three of Netflix’s Black Summer

Everything we need to know about Netflix’s Black Summer season 3

When will Black Summer season three premiere on Netflix?

The first season of Black Summer was released in April 2019, but the second season arrived in June 2021. Given the amount of time the second season took to premiere due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is safe to assume that season three will not be streaming on Netflix before the summer of 2023.

Apt to the title, Netflix usually streams the show every summer, so we can only wait for an official confirmation.

What is the possible storyline of Black Summer season 3?

Season two ended with a killing spree, but the four main characters survived. Nazeri, after surviving the assault, decides to take out Anna and Rosa for having disrupted his plans. Sun escapes via a plane, and Anna comes back to her mother, Rose, in hopes of leaving on a vehicle. At the very end, Rose finally opens her eyes.

Season three would possibly follow Anna’s trajectory as she tries to find ways in which she can safely transport Rose. It is also essential to see what the season has in store for Nazeri. The season might also see Rose teaming up with former rivals to stay alive.

Jaime King, who plays Rose in the series, shared her thoughts to The Express about what she expects from the third season. She seemed pretty thrilled to go back to the writer’s room and spoke of “a few ideas” that she already had.

“This is the kind of series that could go on forever, but I think it would be really powerful to do it in just three seasons, if possible. […] What do you do when there are no more commodities left? Exploring that idea.”

To Comicbook.com, while talking about her character, she said, “I don’t know if I’m allowed to say this. Hypothetically speaking, I would centre it on different chapters, where we are exploring sort of three central figures in different places. But that’s just — I don’t know, sketches.”

Who are the cast members in Black Summer season three?

Being an apocalyptic flick, it does not take long for a character to appear and then vanish at lightning speed. The number of deaths is terrifyingly high, but a consistent set of cast members have recurrent appearances every season.

  • Jamie King as Rose
  • Zoe Marlett as Anna
  • Justin Chu Cary as Spears
  • Christine Lee as Sun

Given how volatile and unpredictable the events in Black Summer are, it is difficult to understand what characters are going to sustain throughout the season.
