Netflix’s ‘This Summer Will Be Different’ book adaptation: Everything we know so far
Carley Fortune’s hold over the romance adaptation boom is showing no sign of letting up. With Every Year After already earning a second season at Prime Video, Netflix is now getting its own slice of the author’s sun-soaked world with This Summer Will Be Different. How amazing is that!
The television adaptation is officially in production on Prince Edward Island, where the novel itself is set. There is no release date just yet, but the cast is in place, and the series has started filming.
Sophie Nélisse will lead the story as Lucy Ashby, a florist who rushes to help her best friend Bridget when the bride-to-be starts getting cold feet. Sounds manageable enough. Except Lucy has history with Bridget’s brother Felix… Rather intimate history, as it happens.
Roby Attal will play Felix, better known as Wolf, while Francesca Reale takes on the role of Bridget. Lucy and Felix first met during an earlier trip to the island and ended up spending the night together before she realised exactly who he was.
Bridget has three rules for Lucy’s visits to Prince Edward Island, with the final one being the most important: do not fall in love with Felix. You hardly need us to tell you how brilliantly that goes.
This Summer Will Be Different will go exploring several summers, following Lucy through her 20s as she works out what she wants from love without making a complete hash of her closest friendship. Netflix describes it as a simmering romance, so expect plenty of yearning before the emotional mess.
Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart are serving as creators and executive producers. Fortune is also involved behind the scenes, while Karen Maine, Jasmin Mozaffari and Fab Filippo are among the directors attached to the series.
And this is not Fortune’s only screen project, either. Netflix is also developing Meet Me at the Lake. At this rate, summer romance telly may soon belong entirely to her.
