Everything we know about ‘Squid Game’ season two

Squid Game, the Korean thriller, took the world by storm in the September of 2021. The dystopian Netflix drama was all everyone could talk about that fall.

It left viewers on the edge of their seats with its intense plot and bloody, unexpected twists. Even though the first season was a perfectly contained story, as it concluded, it became evident that there was much more to the story.

Squid Game was a reflection on the human condition. The gripping story, coupled with stellar performances, earned the cast several accolades, including six Emmy Awards in September 2022. Lead Actor in a Drama Series went to Lee Jung-jae, and director Hwang Dong-hyuk clinched the award for Directing in a Drama Series, marking the first time non-English language content had triumphed in these categories.

The second season of Squid Game is already in the works. Read on to know what the story might be and who will be in the cast.

What will Squid Game season two be about?

Season one ended with protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) facing a pivotal decision: to move on with his life or stop another deadly game from happening.

In a Netflix statement from June 2022, series creator Hwang confirmed that Gi-hun would return for the second season. Hwang hinted that season two would focus on Gi-hun’s transformation, exploring what this new version of the character would do in the aftermath of the first season.

Hwang told The Hollywood Reporter, “Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next.” He continued, “There will naturally be a flow of events that will lead all the way to the end of the season.”

Of course, Hwang couldn’t divulge more, “I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character.”

The creators have also confirmed the return of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and hinted at the possible reappearance of Gong Yoo’s character, the recruiter in the suit and a Ddakji game. Both characters are key figures in the organisation orchestrating the deadly competition. The unresolved fate of Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) is likely to be revisited as well. The detective, who went undercover to the arena to find his missing brother, discovered a shocking truth in the finale, potentially setting the stage for his return in season two.

Who will be in the cast of Squid Game season two?

Netflix announced the final cast for Squid Game season two on June 28th, 2023, introducing eight new stars to the ensemble. Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Seong Gi-hun, and Wi Ha-joon is set to return as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, though the nature of his role remains uncertain.
