Everything we know about ‘Ripley’

Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel, The Talented Mr Ripley, titled simply Ripley, could be a captivating addition to the streaming platform’s repertoire. But it is going to be a tall order to fulfil given the absolutely mammoth task of matching up to the original adaptation directed by Anthony Minghella.

Set to premiere this April, this eight-episode limited series has garnered attention not only for its intriguing premise but also for its stylistic choice. The entire series is filmed in black and white, giving it a neo-noir aesthetic.

Adding to the anticipation is the stellar cast. Led by Andrew Scott, whose previous work in Fleabag, All of Us Strangers, and BBC’s Sherlock has earned him widespread acclaim and adoration in equal bits, one major draw for Ripley is its cast, which also includes Dakota Fanning.

As anticipation continues to build for Netflix’s adaptation of Ripley, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Netflix series.

What is Ripley about?

In the bustling backdrop of 1960s New York, the story of Ripley unfolds with the slippery Mr Ripley at its centre.

Hired by a wealthy man to persuade his son, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home from a prolonged Italian vacation, Tom’s journey takes a sinister turn as he becomes entangled in a web of deceit, fraud, and murder. As he immerses himself in Dickie’s luxurious lifestyle abroad, Tom’s intentions become increasingly disturbing.

Who is in the cast of Ripley?

The cast of Ripley boasts a lineup of talented actors who bring Highsmith’s characters to life. Whether they will be able to transcend constant comparisons to the 1999 cast—littered with some of the best in the game at the point in Hollywood, is yet to be seen.

Joining Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley is Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles. Additionally, the series features Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich in an as of yet undisclosed role.

When is Ripley being released?

After initially being set to air on Showtime, Ripley made a move to Netflix in February 2023. All eight episodes are scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, April 4th, 2024, marking the culmination of over four years of anticipation since the series was first announced.
