Everything we know about Netflix’s 'Top Boy' season 4

Top Boy made a triumphant return to the screens after being cancelled in 2013 when Netflix started streaming it. It went on to become one of the most popular and most-watched shows on the streamer just weeks after its release. And now, Netflix is renewing Top Boy for a fourth season ten-episode run to appease fans.

When asked about the series, star Ashley Walters had a lot to say. He told Vice that the show was a “raw, real representation of the street culture” that “explores how these characters came to make the choices they make and gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look as to what is happening on our streets today.”

He emphasised the need for the street culture to be the point of conversation and spoke of how the show gives them a legitimate platform to showcase the story. He even praised Netflix for being the “perfect platform for this show” due to the absence of too many networks who are “brave enough to keep it this real”.

Based in the streets of London, the show is sincere, honest, brutal and thought-provoking. With an epic three-season run that has got fans hooked, the upcoming fourth season has caused quite the stir.

Everything we know about Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4

What is the production status of Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4?

After Netflix announced the return of Top Boys for the third season in 2017, there were reports of two back-to-back seasons that basically confirmed the release of season four. However, it was not until two years later that the third season was released. Although people expected the fourth season to drop early, the coronavirus pandemic halted and delayed the production schedule.

Drake confirmed at the beginning of 2020 that new episodes would arrive that year. Production was scheduled to start in spring 2020 but got disrupted due to the pandemic. Filming had begun in December 2020 in London, as confirmed by a clip shared by Netflix on their official account.

Ashley Walters confirmed that “it’s going well”.

“The scripts are really good, really tight,” said he, adding, “We’re coming at it from a new perspective this time, because I’m executive producing on this one, so creatively and script-wise I’m much more involved.”

He also spoke of how the pandemic had disrupted all their plans and impacted the schedules.  “Because of COVID, we’ve lost so many locations so we’re just having to move with what we can< he shared. “One day we’re doing [episode] six, then we’re back to one, then to three.”

Although it has been “difficult”, he promised a “banger” season that would be worth the wait.

When will Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4 release?

Given the current status of production, it could be streaming on Netflix sometime around the end of 2021.

What is the plot for Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4?

Showrunner Ronan Bennett gushed over the third season of Netflix’s Top Boy. He told Metro, “I think the new season is brilliant, I really do. We don’t want to sit on our laurels.”

After a riveting third season, fans are excited for the upcoming season as well. From the mysterious gunshot that puts Dris’ fate on the line, and that led to many conspiracy theories to the uncertainty of Tilly’s future, a lot remains unaddressed. The third season ended with a twist where the assumed rookies, Lee and Sarah, were actually police officers. This reveal was a major part of the show’s official social media accounts.

Bennett had a lot to add about the show’s fourth season and especially about Sully’s impending emotional conflicts. He spoke of how he had developed the scene where Sully escapes the fire, before adding to Radio Times, “Certainly we’re taking that a step further in the new season”, referring to how much darker the season would get.

Dazed recorded him talking about how “Season one went out across four consecutive nights and the reviews were fantastic” and in season two, “it was a question of how to expand the world and move the characters along”.

He said, “The thing I am very aware of is that the ending of season 2 is really quite harsh. Season one and three have more hope.”

The cast is extremely proud of the end product. The standards and expectations are high as well. Micheal Ward told Wonderland that it was “actually important” for them to “tell our story and the stories of people around us is what’s actually important”.

Ashley Walters realises that the “most surreal concepts and ideas” on the television or films are based on “true stories”. He said, “Transferring real stories and putting them onscreen is one of the hardest things and that’s what I think Top Boy [does] better than most other shows or films in its genre.”

Who are the cast members on Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4?

Netflix’s Top Boy Season 4 will most likely have the following cast members:

  • Ashley Walters as Dushane
  • Kane ‘Kano’ Robinson as Sully
  • Micheal Ward as Jamie
  • Ashley Thomas as Jermaine
  • Jasmine Jobson as Jaq
  • David ‘Dave’ Omoregie as Modie
  • Simbi ‘Little Simz’ Ajikawo as Shelley
  • Lisa Dwan as Lizzie
  • Kadeem Ramsay as Kit
  • Saffron Hocking as Lauryn

In July 2020, the cast had an Instagram reunion without specifying if it was a warm-up for the next season or a general family reunion.

Fans are also excited about a possible Drake cameo at some point in the show. Drake was the one who resuscitated the show and then executive produced it to be put on Netflix.

Walters had a lot to share about this. He spoke of how Drake watched the show and started a stir when he questioned when the cancelled show was coming back. He actually went ahead to bring back the show without imposing too much creative control, allowing the crew and the cast to adhere to their original plans.
