Everything we know about Netflix’s 'The Wizard of Oz' remake, 'Rainbow'

Netflix has been dabbling in Spanish content for quite some time and has been producing excellent shows and films that have garnered fan attention and acclaim. Recently, they have started working in collaboration with Telecinco Cinema, known for works like Pan’s Labyrinth to create the reimagination of The Wizard of Oz via a film called Rainbow

Directed by the highly acclaimed director and actor Paco Leon, known for his films Arde, Madrid and Kiki, Love to Love etc., the film will be yet another reiteration of the beloved classic. An executive from Telecinco Cinema shared that they were “excited” by paco’s idea of this “new adventure”. They praised the director by saying, “Paco is a unique author with a very personal vision, so only he could create a project like this. A film that Telecinco Cinema and Mediaset España is facing with enormous enthusiasm!”

Leon admitted that he is “dead scared and hugely excited to see how this film, written during quarantine, comes out as [he] believe[s] it is a huge step forward in [his] career as a director”.

He spoke of how it was “bigger” than his previous films not only on the scale of budget but also “because of the complexity of production and the number of weeks of production”. The filmmaker expressed his ecstasy and thrill at being able to showcase the film that sees the confluence of “admired artists that will take part in the production including the main cast, small features, and all sorts of collaborations”.

When will Netflix’s Rainbow release?

Although Netflix has not announced an official date for release, keeping in mind the status of production, Rainbow will most likely be streaming on the platform by mid-2022.

What is the plot for Netflix’s Rainbow?

Netflix’s Rainbow is set to be a modern-day iteration of Lyman Frank Baum’s famous 1900 classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz which has, since its inception, undergone various adaptations and reimaginations.

Netflix’s film will revolve around Dorothy’s journey as the spirited teenager who embarks on a wondrous adventure in a premise steeped in the contemporary cultural and aesthetic appeal, including fashion, arts, dance and a whole rush of music.

When asked why the film was named Rainbow, the producer Sandra Hermida had an interesting thing to say. “Rainbow represents the vibrant and heterogeneous moment that the film industry is experiencing right now, where creativity and quality shines,” she shared. “For this new adventure, we have surrounded ourselves with an irresistible combination of emerging and seasoned talent, both in front and behind the scene. This is the best possible team to bring to the screen the wonders of Paco’s universe. Let the ride begin!”

Who are the cast members on Netflix’s Rainbow?

The film is set to have an interesting cast. Dora Postigo, the 17-year-old Spanish singing sensation will play the role of modern Dorothy. Postigo will be joined by Sky High’s Ayax Pedrosa, Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown’s Caren Maura, The Bar’s Carmen Machi as well as Wekafore Jibril.

Soraya Yasmin, Carmina Barrios, Luis Bermejo, Hovik Keuchkerian and Samantha Hudson are also going to be a part of the cast.

What is the status of the production of Netflix’s Rainbow?

It was confirmed by Variety in August 2021 that filming was underway in Madrid. The cast and crew will be filming for eight weeks, from August to the end of September, in and around Madrid, Toledo, Segovia, Guadalajara and Alicante.
