The upcoming apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind has had its first trailer released, and it looks even more nerve-wracking than we could have imagined. Based on the 2020 book by Rumaan Alam, the Netflix movie sees how two different families survive a mysterious nationwide blackout.
Leave the World Behind is directed by Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail, meaning he knows a thing or two about building suspense around technology-based thriller concepts. The cast includes Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke as Amanda and Clay Sandford, Moonlight and True Detective actor Mahershala Ali as GH Scott, and Kevin Bacon as local oddball Danny.
Alam, whose original book was nominated for the National Book Award, serves as executive producer on Leave the World Behind alongside Barack and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman, and Nick Krishnamurthy. It’s produced by Esmail Corp, Red Om Films, and executive produced by Higher Ground Productions.
Leave the World Behind is set to hit limited theatres on November 22nd, 2023, and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting December 8th, 2023. Watch the trailer below.
What is Leave The World Behind about?
When Amanda, a high-flying New York advertising executive, books an impromptu getaway with her family, she takes her husband Clay and kids Archie (played by Charlie Evans) and Rose (played by Farrah Mackenzie) to a stunning Long Island vacation home.
Things take a turn, however, when GH Scott arrives unannounced with his daughter Ruth (played by Myha’la). It turns out that he’s the actual owner of the home, and has retreated from the city also… but for very different reasons.
Bearing news of mysterious blackouts in the city, GH believes that the US is experiencing a widespread cyberattack. Seeking refuge in the house he claims is theirs, tensions arise between GH and the Sandford family as they try to navigate an increasingly real and terrifying global crisis.
