Everything to know about Team Downey’s ‘Weather Girl’ limited series
Weather Girl, which has managed to put the audience on an emotional rollercoaster of comedy and tragedy since its debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2024, is now coming to Netflix as a limited series, executive produced by Team Downey.
Brian Watkins, the play’s author, capitalised on the lead character, Stacey Gross’s breakdown, to forewarn the viewers about the far-fetched impact of consumerism and global warming. Speaking of his story, Watkins acknowledged, “Those subjects can feel like proselytising or editorialising unless they’re funny and enjoyable. That’s really what I went for” (via Variety).
Julia McDermott performed a recent sold-out show at Brooklyn’s St Ann’s Warehouse. And following a high-stakes bidding war, Netflix finally acquired the rights to the play to turn it into a limited series, after a similar approach with Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer. However, the Netflix edition will focus beyond Stacey, offering viewers a glimpse into the people she dates, her family and colleagues in Fresno, California.

What is it about?
The upcoming Netflix version of Weather Girl is set in the inferno-scorched California, focusing on an ambitious local television weather reporter, Stacey. Although she carries a glossy and professional persona on-air, underneath, she hides her deepest agony over the devastation of her hometown. After covering a report from a blazing home with a family of five inside, Stacey begins to “unravel and spiral away from the reality she presents on screen.”
Weather Girl opens up about the impending climate apocalypse, but it’s also a character-driven drama that entwines with an unlikely reunion between Stacey and her estranged mother.
Who’s in the cast and crew?
Julia McDermott has reprised the role from Watkins’s stage production for the Netflix limited series. The rest of the names are still shrouded in mystery. Watkins will serve as the writer, showrunner, and EP, who’s also supposed to direct the first episode. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey will executive produce on behalf of Team Downey alongside A24 and Amanda Burrell. McDermott will also produce the series.
