Everything to know about Netflix’s Karen Read-John O’Keefe documentary

This year, Netflix has churned out an array of documentaries. Yet, none has conjured as much anticipation as its announcement of a documentary around Karen Read and the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe. It’s one of the most high-profile cases in recent history that has seen streaming counterparts roll out documentaries before. But now that the second trial has officially concluded, the buzz is right back on the radar.

Netflix announced a three-part documentary last year on the mysterious death of O’Keefe. A tragic scene unfolded in Canton, Massachusetts, on January 29th, 2022, where the police officer was discovered unresponsive in the snow outside his residence. The aftermath revealed a complex investigation, culminating in charges against his then-girlfriend, Read. She was allegedly charged with multiple offences, including second-degree murder under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.

It was argued that Read had hit-and-run O’Keefe when she was drunk. However, the defence contested those allegations, claiming she was framed. It was further alleged that the law enforcement was conspiring to cover up the reality. And if anything, she was the victim of the situation. On July 1st, 2024, the jury delivered a deadlock notice to the presiding judge, revealing their inability to forge a unanimous decision.

The judge declared a mistrial, and a second trial was scheduled. On June 18th, 2025, Read was allegedly found not guilty of second-degree murder. She was also reportedly acquitted of two other charges: vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of the incident. However, she was found guilty of driving under the influence.

The Karen Read-John O’Keefe case has sparked plenty of discussions and debates so far. But speaking of the Netflix documentary that awaits in the pipeline, it remains untitled. However, what’s known, thanks to Tudum, is that the upcoming docu-series will meticulously try to connect the dots of what happened in the days before O’Keefe’s tragic death.

The Karen Read-John O’Keefe documentary is currently under production with Sandpaper Films. Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller are co-directing the three-part Netflix docu-series. Although this is not the first documentary about the case, Netflix has taken an oath to do it justice, noting the sensitivity and public sentiment around it.

“The team feels immensely privileged to be bringing this important series to a Netflix global audience,” they told Tudum. “We are also mindful that this is a hugely sensitive case and we are determined to treat all those involved with the respect and consideration they deserve,” Johnson and Miller assured.
