Everything to know about Taraji P Henson’s ‘Give Me Some Sugah’
For a film with “sugah” in the title, this one has a spectacularly cruel sense of timing, because the new Netflix movie Give Me Some Sugah is about two people who spent years crossing paths without knowing just how much history stood between them.
Taraji P. Henson plays Lenore Lindsey, a Chicago baker who gave up her son for adoption when she was 17. Decades later, that son, Vamarr Hunter, coincidentally became a regular customer at Lenore’s South Shore bakery. Interesting? We know!
Guess who is behind the film as a producer? It’s Tyler Perry, reuniting with DeVon Franklin for the second project from their novel partnership with Netflix.
It also continues Taraji P. Henson’s long-running collaboration with Tyler Perry, after films including The Family That Preys, I Can Do Bad All by Myself, Acrimony and, more recently, Straw.

What is the true story behind Give Me Some Sugah?
Okay, brace yourself because this might be a little too hard to process. Vamarr first visited Lenore’s bakery years before discovering that he had been adopted. Something about the place kept drawing him back, so he became a regular without ever realising that the woman running it was his biological mother.
Then a genealogist helped trace his birth family. Lenore called him. And when “Give Me Some Sugah” appeared on his caller ID, the penny finally dropped. The bakery he had been visiting all those years belonged to the woman who had given birth to him.
Their reunion also came at an extraordinarily difficult time. Lenore was undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and a stroke near the end of chemotherapy put both her health and the future of the bakery in jeopardy. Vamarr had no baking background, but he learnt the trade to help his mother and eventually took over the business.
Lenore is now cancer-free, which gives the whole thing a happy ending. Vamarr did not just find his mother, but he arrived at precisely the moment she needed somebody to help carry what she had built. Guess miracles do happen.
Who is in Give Me Some Sugah?
Henson leads as Lenore, with Joey Bada$$ in the cast. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays Angie, while Russell Hornsby appears as Robert, and Netflix has Alexis Louder among the wider ensemble.
When is Give Me Some Sugah releasing?
Give Me Some Sugah arrives on Netflix on December 16, and this one does not need much embellishment because real life has done enough of the magic.
