Everything you need to know about ‘Superstar’ on Netflix
If viewers think that Netflix’s weekly departure arc has left an uncompensated void, they’re mistaken. While they were busy shedding a tear or two with titles slipping from the grasp of their remote fingers, Netflix stepped up with an arrival schedule that fits the bill of a streaming saviour. This week, the platform is about to welcome quite a few highly anticipated original productions, among which the upcoming Spanish series, Superstar, AKA, Superestar, has caught every eye.
When Netflix announced its billion-euro investment plan in Spain, that was enough of a cue that the Spanish showbiz players were lining up to be on the platform. And coming up this week is the Spanish limited series Superstar, co-directed by Nacho Vigalondo and Claudia Costafreda, which was confirmed by the streaming giant last year.
Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo have co-produced the Netflix series for Suma Content, and it is co-written by Vigalondo, Maria Bastaros, Paco Bezerra, and Costafreda.
But why’s it gaining so much traction?
What is the story of Superstar?
Superstar is a six-part Netflix original limited series about the rise of Yurena, formerly known as Tamara Seisdedos. Steeped in camp and controversy, her career really took off with ‘No cambié’ and her album, Superestar. According to the official synopsis, the show chronicles Yurena’s unconventional breakthrough in Spanish entertainment, defying the textbook definitions of fame and success.
It was a time when a strange phenomenon swept the airwaves, and creatures once dismissed as oddities became the faces of front pages, despite their refusal to succumb to the norms. According to the synopsis, it is supposedly “a magical story with room for esoteric conspiracies”, some long nights and “quantum bricks”, with a vibrant posse of supervillains, and a star born out of an impossibility, that is Tamara. That sounds like a lot going down in a short amount of time.
Who is in the cast?
Ingrid García Jonsson, from Netflix’s The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, has joined the cast as the protagonist, Yurena, while Natalia de Molina from Reign will play Loly Álvarez in the series.
More cast members include Carlos Arecs as Paco Porras, Pepón Nieto as Tony Genil, Julián Villagrán as Arlequín, Scun de la Rosa as Leonardo Dantés, Terelu Campos as María Teresa Campos, and Rocío Ibáñez as Margarita Seisdedos. Alongside them, Neus Asensi, Óscar Ladoire, Javier Gurruchaga, Jorge Javier Vázquez, and Óscar Ladoire round out the cast.
