Every song used in Olivia Colman’s ‘Joyride’

Despite being released back in 2022, Joyride has recently landed on Netflix. Viewers are already praising the Irish film, which, until now, had flown relatively under the radar. It stars Olivia Colman, who performs with a rather convincing Irish accent, and newcomer Charlie Reid.

The film, directed by Emer Reynolds, follows Reid’s Mully, a 12-year-old who has recently lost his mother, and after his father tries to steal money raised in her memory, Mully runs off with it instead. He soon meets and forms an unusual alliance with Colman’s Joy, who has just given birth to a baby with whom she feels no attachment to. They embark on a road trip together (the child behind the steering wheel), with both of them trying to escape to better lives.

Joyride blends heartfelt and charming comedy with more serious explorations of motherhood and parental loss. While it didn’t receive overwhelmingly high praise when it was released two years ago, sitting more in ‘good but not great’ territory, it has already soared to number one in Netflix UK’s movie charts.

Colman’s performance is undeniably fantastic as always, and Reid gives a powerful performance as a child who attempts to take the reins on his life despite being just 12 years old. Fans of the film have also praised the soundtrack, which contains various songs sung by the cast themselves.

Alongside these original performances from Reid and Colman, there is a score composed by Ray Harman. Then there’s a few pre-existing songs, like ‘Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep’ by the 70s pop group Middle of the Road, and a more recent track in the form of Villagers’ 2015 song ‘Courage’.

There is a real blend of well-known acts and more obscure artists, with the soundtrack boasting tracks like Ultravox’s ‘Dancing with Tears in My Eyes’ alongside ‘It’ll Come Around’ by The Whileaways, an Irish trio.
