As the release date for Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Barbie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Reynolds, and half of Hollywood draws closer, fans and Barbie enthusiasts have eagerly been searching for relevant entertainment on Netflix and other streaming sites.
The Barbie promotional events have been just as whimsical as one would expect a Greta Gerwig-Barbie tie-up to be. The internet is in a tizzy over a very-pink Barbie house magically appearing (as if out of nowhere) on the Malibu coast. While living in this Airbnb may be the dream for many, we have a more affordable alternative to quench your Barbie fever.
Fortunately, Netflix has a plethora of Barbie films and series available for streaming. From magical mermaids to epic road trips, there is something for every kid (and those who are still kids at heart). Plus, there is the quintessential Greta Gerwig film, Frances Ha.
In September 2022, Netflix added Barbie: Mermaid Power to its library. The film follows underwater adventures and magical mermaid transformations. For those craving a more recent addition to the franchise (38th feature in the series overall), there is Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday, which arrived in November 2021. It marks Chelsea’s (Barbie’s youngest sister) first starring role, as it follows her on her seventh birthday during a cruise with her family. It is the perfect watch for the kiddos, with a runtime of just about an hour.
For a more engaging experience, Netflix introduced Barbie Epic Road Trip in the fall of 2022. Described as an interactive adventure, viewers can make decisions and directly engage with the story, reminiscent of Black Mirror’s standalone offering Bandersnatch and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt spin-off film Kimmy vs the Reverend.
March 2023 brought a brand-new addition to the franchise, Barbie: Skipper and the Big Babysitting Adventure. This animated film follows Skipper (one of Barbie’s younger sisters) on her summer shenanigans.
There are several Barbie shows available on Netflix as well. One of them is Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, one of the longest-running Barbie series with five seasons. It is a follow-up to the Barbie: Dolphin Magic film. Currently, three seasons are available on the streaming platform. And, of course, there is more.
