Emmy-sweeping ‘Adolescence’ returns to Netflix charts amid season two buzz
From Wednesday to Stranger Things, Netflix has a strong history of dishing out award-winning shows. But most recently, the Emmy-sweeping Adolescence evidently gave them a run for their money with eight whopping wins on the ceremony’s 77th edition.
While Wednesday and Stranger Things remain the most-watched and third-most-watched shows on Netflix, the second-most-watched series of all time is back for more on the streaming charts.
Hot on the heels of its record-breaking Emmy-winning night, Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne’s Adolescence is back on Netflix’s top ten series chart globally. According to FlixPatrol, the psychological thriller is currently ranked fifth on the international chart with Black Rabbit, Wednesday, Billionaires’ Bunker and Bon Appétit, Your Majesty preceding it at positions one, two, three, and four, respectively.
On Netflix’s all-time chart, Adolescence reportedly holds a record viewership of 142.6million views, putting it in the second place right behind the first season of Alfred Gough and Miles Miller’s hit black comedy series, Wednesday. The debut season of the Jenna Ortega-led series has 252.1million views.
Adolescence hit Netflix shelves on March 13th, becoming one of the most-talked-about shows of streaming history in no time. The miniseries revolves around the unsettling case of 13-year-old Jamie Miller, arrested on account of his female classmate’s murder. The Netflix show sparked prolonged debates and discussions surrounding the consequences of unchecked digital influence on children and teenagers, prompting the UK’s Prime Minister to collaborate with the streamer for a mandated viewing of the series in secondary schools.
The crime drama currently boasts a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score, and just a week ago, Adolescence made history for Emmys. While it sure grabbed headlines with eight wins out of 13 nominations, 15-year-old actor Owen Cooper, who portrayed Jamie in the Netflix series, became the youngest actor ever to win ‘Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.’
Graham, who played Jamie’s dad, Eddie, in Adolescence, bagged an Emmy for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, marking his first acting Emmy win. As for those waiting on the second season clamour, in a recent conversation with Cinemablend, co-creator Thorne was asked about the possibility despite speculation that Adolescence was one and done.
He clarified that there would be no “continuation” of Miller’s story, but the team could be leveraging the one-shot technique in the future to bring something just as interesting. “We are talking about finding ways to use the one-shot more in a different way. And we’d love to do that. Maybe it’s about the team versus finding a new story that we’re just as passionate about telling,” he added. Although they’re “working on that,” there are no definite answers about it currently.
Thorne additionally acknowledged that “there is stuff you could do with Jamie as a character.” But that story feels somewhat finished. While viewers have shown interest in Katie’s POV, the co-creator believes they are not the ones who should be telling that story. In short, the characters from Adolescence are now done and dusted. But “now we’re trying to find a new way of using that vocabulary because we love it,” he added. Although it remains to be seen what awaits the show’s future, a second season seems unlikely. However, till the dust settles, fans can tune into Adolescence, currently streaming on Netflix.
