Emily Henry to bring ‘Funny Story’ and ‘Happy Place’ adaptations after ‘People We Meet on Vacation’
Right ahead of the release of People We Meet on Vacation, the inaugural Emily Henry movie adaptation on Netflix, the rom-com author dropped a surprise announcement that the platform is all set to develop both Funny Story and Happy Place for the screen.
Henry, who executive-produced People We Meet on Vacation, will write both adaptations. In a conversation with Tudum, she expressed her delight, saying, “I genuinely couldn’t be more excited to work on the adaptations of Happy Place and Funny Story with Netflix.”
“The entire team there has been so passionate about, dedicated to, and supportive of People We Meet on Vacation from the jump, and getting to do it all over again – this time writing the scripts myself – has been a thrill. I feel so lucky to have found this home for these films, among people who believe deeply in the necessity and power of this kind of story.”
Alexander Black and Natalie Sellers will serve as producers for Funny Story on behalf of Lyrical Media, with Aaron Ryder and Andrew Sweet producing for RPC. Meanwhile, Jennifer Lopez, who also has the rom-com Office Romance awaiting a 2026 release on Netflix, will produce Happy Place for Nuyorican alongside Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina.
In the literary world, Henry has already developed a massive following, which, in turn, excites readers to witness their favourite characters and love stories coming to life on the screen.
People We Meet on Vacation, premiering today, January 9th, follows two unlikely best friends, free-spirited author Poppy and reserved teacher Alex, who take an annual trip every year. But when a fallout occurs during one of those trips, the entire tradition is upended for a while until one fine day, Poppy invites Alex on one last vacation, hoping to reconcile.
Little do they know that the trip would actually become the catalyst for their long-impending confrontation, and that they were each other’s home all along. Tudum also unveiled an exclusive clip from People We Meet on Vacation, which Herny shared to nearly 120,000 Substack subscribers, showing Alex and Poppy’s messy love story blooming in full throttle.
Don’t forget to tune into Alex and Poppy’s meet-cute story on Netflix, and in case you’re from New York, you can experience the movie magic first-hand at the immersive summer oasis pop-up from January 10th to January 11th.
Regarding Funny Story and Happy Place, well, you may need to wait a little while for additional updates. But it goes without saying that the wait would be worth it.
