Did you know Netflix is releasing a new Michael Schumacher F1 documentary?

Netflix is revving up its engines for its second documentary on legendary Formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher, Schumacher ’94, a new feature-length film focusing on the most significant year of his prolific career.

Netflix recently revealed its upcoming slate of German-produced content and international non-fiction features for 2026 during the streamer’s What Next? The 2026 showcase in Berlin, where the announcement was made (via What’s on Netflix).

Previously, in 2021, Netflix released a documentary on the F1 superstar, titled Schumacher, exploring the life and career of the seven-time F1 champion. But contrary to the previous documentary, Schumacher ’94 aims to offer a focused and in-depth look at the year and the F1 season that was a game-changer.

According to Netflix’s official synopsis for Schumacher ’94 provided at the Berlin event, the sports documentary follows 25-year-old Michael Schumacher on his trail to win the first Grand Prix of the season in Brazil while racing for the Benetton-Ford team. This victory turned out to be the turning point of his career, marking a breakthrough season and sparking a cultural and global phenomenon called “Schumi Mania.”

While Schumacher ’94 undoubtedly highlights the highs, the documentary also captures the incredible lows of the season. 1994 was one of the most emotionally-charged years in the sport’s history, marked by the tragic accident of Ayrton Senna at Imola. It was also the year when widespread allegations of exploitation, technical cheating, and unethical driving activities flooded the scene. So, the upcoming documentary clearly differs from the previous one.

But like the previous projects the family endorsed, Schumacher ’94 will include contributions of figures closest to the F1 legend. Among those confirmed to be featured in the documentary is his wife, Corinna Schumacher, who is expected to bring viewers insights into the “beginnings of an extraordinary love story – one that is still going strong today.”

In short, although Schumacher ’94 will talk about a pivotal year in F1 sport’s history, complete with its technical and political aspects, the documentary will also have a strong emotional backbone that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Directed by Christin Freitag, the creative team of Schumacher ’94 includes director of photography Nicolai Mehring, editor Bobby Good, and set designer Benjamin Scholl. LEONINE Documentaries is producing the sports documentary with Jochen Köstler, Janek Romero, and Constanze Guttmann serving as executive producers.

As of now, the release date is shrouded in mystery. However, it’s expected to drop in 2026 globally.
