Creators discuss final season of ‘Vikings: Valhalla’

The eight-episode first season of Vikings: Valhalla first arrived on Netflix in February 2022 and has since garnered a massive global following with two follow-up seasons. The third and final season premiered on July 11th, 2024, and viewers are now making their way through the story’s closing chapters with excitement and sadness in equal measure.

The historical drama series follows on from the events of the History Channel’s Vikings a century on. In the 11th century AD, this cast of Vikings and Anglo-Saxon descendants clash over beliefs, territories and legacies.

Co-creator and executive producer Jeb Stuart has confirmed that the third season will, indeed, be a farewell to this arc of Valhalla. “When we started this project five years ago, I worked hard with this incredible cast and crew to craft a journey that we all hoped would be satisfying,” Stuart said in a new statement.

Continuing, Stuart observed that such fictional stories always have the capacity for continuation. However, a good creator knows when to stop whittling the sculpture. “With real historical figures, there are always more aspects of their lives that could be explored, but it made sense storywise for our Leif, Freydís, and Harald’s voyages to end with our third season,” he said. “And we really cannot wait for the fans to see the conclusion of this chapter of history.”

In the third and final season, tense scenes unfold as Canute kneels to Christian leaders and Freydís anxiously awaits a fiery demise. Meanwhile, Leif meets a mapmaker before unravelling ambitions to set sail to the far west for new opportunities.

In his statement, Stuart discussed his pride in dramatising the lives of some of history’s most iconic Vikings. “I am so grateful to have had three seasons to tell the stories of Leif, Harald, and Freydís,” he said. “I knew from the beginning that I wanted to show the evolution of how three of the most famous Vikings became the icons we know today, and we have done just that.”

Vikings: Valhalla season three is available to stream now. In a parting wish, Stuart added: “I hope when the audience gets to see the new season, they’ll be excited by all the new heights that we’ve taken these heroes.”
