‘Dept Q’ ending explained: Who was the shooter?

After Netflix announced that Dept Q is open for business, fans buckled up for a mystery adventure unlike any other. But with Netflix, closures are never black and white. And Dept Q was no exception. Initially, Detective Carl Morck wasn’t keen on solving cases when he undertook the management of a cold-case unit in Scotland. Then again, the cards didn’t fall in his favour.

Morck unearths a case that was buried four years ago, involving a person who allegedly fell from a ferry, or so everyone thought. The person was Merritt Lingard. However, before viewers can make sense of her story, it’s cut short with a magnifying focus on Morck’s investigation. Determined to solve the case that keeps him up at night, Morck assembled his own group of mavericks.

At the start of the Netflix series, it’s believed that Merritt fell off a ferry cruise while she was accompanying her disabled brother, William. But when Morck starts investigating the possibilities of whether she really fell or was pushed, conversations with Merritt’s housekeeper, her boss, and a few more cryptic clues convince Dept Q that she was probably kidnapped. Moreover, the fact that her body was never washed up on the shore becomes a too-telling cue.

By the end of Dept Q, Detective Morck and his new assistant Akram track down solicitor Merritt, following an intense and extensive period of investigation. It’s the links between Sam Haig and Lyle Jennings that ultimately get them close to the real deal. However, when they figure out that Merrit has been kept captive inside the grounds of the Jennings’ shipping company, Shorebird Ocean Systems, their primary problem becomes figuring out how to depressurise the chamber without killing Merritt.

At the beginning of Dept Q, when James Hardy was paralysed after being shot at a crime scene he was investigating with Morck, Carl was overwhelmed by survivor’s guilt. The PTSD led him towards therapy, but Morck’s moment of salvation comes when he takes the bullet in the end for Akram. But the question is, who shot him?

Who shot Carl Morck in Dept Q?

Dept Q calls for a full circle when Morck gets shot. It all happens when Hardy guides him and Akram over a call to help them depressurise the chamber. However, like a true villainous entry, Jennings catches them off guard. Morck was shot in the shoulder, but the bullet was meant for Akram. Here, Akram’s background as a Syrian combat veteran comes to the rescue.

Lyle Jennings is taken down, but Mrs Jennings manages to flee the scene. Later, following a cop confrontation, she takes her own life. As for Merritt? She is safely removed from the chamber underneath Shorebird Ocean Systems. Dept Q culminates in the reunion between Merritt and William. However, she never really confronts Morck.

They do slip across each other at police headquarters. However, Morck now has a new mission. He makes use of Stephen Burns’ corruption to persuade the lord advocate to allocate a bigger budget for Dept Q. But that’s not all. He convinces the lord advocate of Akram’s promotion, and the last demand? A better car, please!
