David Fincher to direct Netflix sequel for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

A new Quentin Tarantino movie is in the works – however, the director won’t be directing it. Instead, a revisitation of his Once Upon A Time In Hollywood characters will be helmed by David Fincher.

No, this isn’t Tarantino’s mysterious tenth movie. For a long time, the director has claimed that after his tenth feature film, he’ll retire. However, as he shelved the last effort he was working on, The Movie Critic, for unknown reasons, it appeared that the director was perhaps having to avoid the self-proclaimed end of his career.

However, the plot of The Movie Critic did show his interest in reviving Brad Pitt’s role as Cliff Booth, the Hollywood stuntman turned driver.

But now, it appears that the character might still be getting a revisit, but in his own movie. The Playlist reported that Tarantino has been working on a new script that is not a direct sequel to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood but is derived from it, with the suggestion that Pitt, and possibly Leonardo DiCaprio would revive their earlier roles as Booth and Dalton.

There is also the suggestion that Tarantino won’t be directing the project but would instead be passing it on to David Fincher at Pitt’s recommendation.

Pitt has worked with the director on several occasions, including Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. According to The Playlist, Tarantino was on board with the idea and the mysterious movie project he’s been working on has now been repackaged and bought by Netflix, where Fincher has an exclusive movie deal.

Six years on from the release of the original, which was Pitt and DiCaprio battling against the Manson Family, it’s important to state again that this isn’t a direct sequel. Part of the reason why this project might happen is due to the deal struck between Tarantino and Sony, who financed the original. Their deal maintains that while Sony owns Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Tarantino owns the characters. So this potentially upcoming reboot of those characters will be distant enough from the original movie to honour that deal.
